What Is a Flat-Rack Shipping Container?
A flat-rack shipping container is a steel cargo deck fitted with two reinforced end-walls and no sides or roof, built to ISO 1496-5 for ocean shipping of oversize freight. It keeps the eight standard corner castings so it can be stacked and lifted like any intermodal box, but the cargo rides out in the open.
Picture a standard 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container. Now strip off the roof. Strip off the long side-walls. Strip off the cargo doors. You are left with a heavy steel deck the size of the floor, two reinforced end-walls (one at each short end), and a set of corner castings at the eight ISO corners so the unit can still be stacked, lifted, and lashed to a ship’s hold like any other intermodal box. That is a flat-rack.
It is not a box. It is a deck with end-walls. The cargo sits on the deck out in the open, exposed to whatever the weather does. The whole point of the design is to carry things that would not fit through a 7-foot 8-inch door, or under a 7-foot 10-inch interior ceiling, or between 7-foot 8-inch wide interior walls. If your cargo is wider than the box, taller than the box, or longer than the box, then the box itself is the problem, and the flat-rack solves it by removing the box.
In the global shipping trade, flat-racks fall under a small family of specialised intermodal equipment that also includes open-tops (roof removed but sides still on), platform containers (no end-walls at all, just the deck), and over-dimensional flatbeds. Each one exists for a specific kind of cargo problem. Flat-racks are the most common of these specials because they retain enough structure (the two end-walls) to be safely stacked and lifted by container handlers, while still being open enough to handle oversize freight on three of four sides.

The flat-rack in one sentence
A flat-rack is the international shipping industry’s answer to cargo that physically will not fit inside a sealed box. It is a deck with end-walls, made to ISO 1496-5, used almost exclusively on ocean vessels and rail to carry heavy machinery, vehicles, boats, and project cargo across borders. It is not designed for storage, not designed for site offices, and not designed for any use case where keeping water off the cargo matters.
Are Flat-Rack End-Walls Collapsible or Fixed?
Flat-racks come in two end-wall designs, and a buyer should know which one they are being quoted. There are fixed-wall flat-racks, where the end-walls are welded upright for the life of the unit, and collapsible flat-racks, where the end-walls fold flat against the deck when the unit is empty. The split matters because it affects price, durability, handling, and resale value.
Fixed end-wall flat-racks
The end-walls are welded to the deck and stay vertical for the life of the unit. Fixed flat-racks are simpler, heavier per unit, and built for the highest payload ratings. A 40-foot fixed flat-rack from a major lessor will commonly carry 45,000 kilograms of static payload, with the newest designs rated up to 50,000 kilograms. They are favoured for repeat heavy-lift work, mining equipment, transformer shipments, and any cargo where bracing against the end-walls (rather than just sitting on the deck) is part of the load plan.
The downside is empty-return logistics. A fixed flat-rack is essentially a permanent deck-and-frame structure that takes up the same vessel space whether it is loaded or empty. Steamship lines hate empty repositioning costs, and fixed flat-racks have to ride back across the ocean as a discrete unit.
Collapsible end-wall flat-racks
The end-walls fold flat against the deck when the unit is empty. Five collapsed flat-racks stack into roughly the cubic footprint of one standard 40-foot box. That single design feature is why collapsibles have become the dominant new build in the global fleet over the last decade. Once they are empty, they ship back as a stack. Less vessel space, less yard space, lower repositioning cost.
The trade-off is a slight payload reduction and a slightly higher unit price when new. Collapsibles also wear differently. The folding hinges and end-wall locks are a maintenance point that fixed units do not have. A 15-year-old collapsible coming off lease will usually have at least one hinge that needs attention before it is offered as cargo-worthy again.
If you ever do need to buy one
For most one-time oversize shipments out of Canada, a collapsible 40-foot flat-rack is what your freight forwarder will quote and what the steamship line will provide. Fixed units are usually only relevant for fleet buyers (heavy haulers, project-cargo specialists) who keep them in continuous rotation. If a Canadian yard is offering you a one-off fixed flat-rack for sale, ask how it ended up there. Often the answer is that a heavy-haul contract ended and the unit got dropped off cheap.
What Does ISO 1496-5 Spec for a Flat-Rack?
The international standard that governs flat-racks is ISO 1496-5: Series 1 freight containers (Specification and testing), Part 5: Platform and platform-based containers. ISO 1496-1 covers the standard general-purpose dry box that most buyers already know. Part 5 of the same standard covers the variations that lose the side-walls and roof: platforms, flat-racks, and collapsible flat-racks. The test regime in Part 5 is different from the dry-box regime because the structural load paths are different. Without sides and roof contributing to rigidity, the deck, end-frames, and corner castings have to carry everything.

Two practical notes on those numbers. First, the internal deck width is the same as a standard dry box because the corner castings sit at the same ISO positions. The width gain on a flat-rack comes from being able to load cargo that overhangs the deck on the long sides, which is permitted within in-gauge tolerances and handled with lashing and bracing. Second, the payload is heroic compared to a dry box (a 40-foot HC dry box maxes out around 27,000 kg payload), because the flat-rack’s load path goes straight from the deck into the corner castings and bottom rails rather than transferring through side panels.
What the CSC plate looks like on a flat-rack
Like any other ISO container, a flat-rack carries a Container Safety Convention plate certifying it for international transport. The CSC plate on a flat-rack lists the same fields you would see on a dry box (gross weight, racking test load, stacking test load), but the deck strength rating is the field that matters most because that is what the freight forwarder will check before they accept a heavy load. WWT-grade or expired-CSC flat-racks turning up in resale yards have lost their international shipping eligibility. They are fine if you want to bolt one to a pad and use it as a deck, but no steamship line will load cargo onto them.
What Actually Ships on a Flat-Rack?
A flat-rack carries the oversize freight that will not fit through a dry-box door or under its ceiling. Globally, flat-racks are project-cargo workhorses. Walk a container terminal in Antwerp, Rotterdam, Singapore, or Vancouver and the flat-racks coming off the vessel are loaded with the things that simply could not fit through a dry-box door. The list is consistent across decades.
Heavy machinery
Excavators, dozers, mining shovels, loader buckets, crusher jaws, forestry harvesters, agricultural combines and headers. Anything tracked or wheeled that is wider than 7’8″ rides on a flat-rack. The end-walls let lashing chains run over the unit in a way that holds the machine firm against vessel roll.
Boats and yachts
Sailboats, powerboats, runabouts, small commercial vessels up to roughly 14 metres. Larger yachts go on dedicated yacht carriers, but in the 8 to 14 metre range a flat-rack with custom cradles is the standard intermodal solution. Boat hulls are wider than a dry box and the keel needs vertical clearance, both problems the flat-rack solves.
Transformers, generators, industrial equipment
Substation transformers, large gensets, compressor packages, heat exchangers. The cargo here is rarely oversize in length but is almost always oversize in width or height. Power plant components in particular ride flat-rack from manufacturer to project site as a matter of course.
Helicopters and aircraft components
Light and medium helicopters ship with rotor blades removed, fuselage on a flat-rack, lashed across the deck. Aircraft sections (wings, tail sections, engines on stands) move the same way between manufacturing facilities and final assembly plants.
Long steel, pipe, lumber, timber
Anything that is long and rigid but not particularly heavy per metre. Steel beams, large-diameter pipe, structural lumber bundles, hardwood logs. The flat-rack accepts the length where a dry box would force you to cut.
Vehicles that do not fit a dry box
Buses, RVs, fire trucks, ambulances, military vehicles, oversize pickups with lift kits and aftermarket tyres. Standard passenger cars ride inside dry boxes (a 40-foot HC fits four cars in racking), but anything bigger than a Ford Excursion is a flat-rack candidate.

The most common reason a Canadian buyer calls Van Blanc asking specifically about flat-racks is because they have an oversize industrial machine they need to ship out of Ontario to a project site abroad. Paul has handled the sourcing on a dozen of these over the years: a hydraulic press headed to Brazil, a CNC mill heading to a UAE factory, a custom-built pellet machine going to a New Zealand farm. In every one of those cases, the buyer already has a freight forwarder and a steamship booking. They are not buying the flat-rack for themselves. They are sourcing it because the forwarder told them the line was short on equipment that week and they would need to bring their own. That is the real Canadian flat-rack use case in 2026.
Do You Actually Need a Flat-Rack?
Most buyers who ask about a flat-rack do not actually need one. When someone walks into our Brantford yard and asks about flat-racks, nine times out of ten they have the wrong product in their head. They are picturing something open, easier to load, easier to walk around, more flexible than a sealed box. What they actually want is one of three other containers.

I sold them a 40HC standard with a side modification, and it came in well under what a flat-rack would have cost them.”
If you want to load and unload easily, you want a side-opener
A side-opener is a standard ISO box with full-length doors along one or both 8-foot sides instead of just at one end. You get sealed-box weather protection and forklift access from any point along the side. This is the right product for warehousing, jobsite tool storage, retail conversions, anywhere loading flexibility matters.
If you need to load tall things from above, you want an open-top
An open-top is a standard ISO box with the roof removed and replaced by a tarpaulin on bows. You can crane-load cargo from directly above (machinery, tall equipment, bulk granular material) and then tarp the unit closed for ocean transit. The diagnostic question that gets buyers to the right product
When someone asks Paul about flat-racks, his first question is always: “Is the cargo travelling on an ocean vessel?” If the answer is no (the cargo is going onto a flatbed truck and staying in Canada, or being stored on the buyer’s property, or being moved between Canadian sites), then a flat-rack is the wrong product. Flat-racks exist for the ocean leg of an intermodal journey. Remove the ocean leg and you remove the reason the flat-rack design exists in the first place.
Why Are Flat-Racks Hard to Buy in Canada?
Flat-racks are hard to buy in Canada because the resale market for them is small and odd. Standard dry boxes flow through Canada in volume. Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are major intermodal terminals, and used dry-box inventory turns over constantly. Flat-racks do not flow the same way, for two reasons.
First, the global flat-rack fleet is much smaller than the dry-box fleet. Drewry’s container census data has the flat-rack and platform population at roughly 1% of the global container fleet, against the ~95% share held by dry boxes. There are simply fewer flat-racks coming off lease and into resale at any given time.
Second, when flat-racks do hit the Canadian resale market, they are usually bought directly by the buyers who already use them: heavy-haul carriers, project-cargo specialists, oilfield service companies, marine transporters. Those buyers know the lessor auction calendar, watch the depot inventories, and grab good units before they ever reach a general container yard. The flat-racks that end up in a standard container dealer’s inventory tend to be the units the specialists already passed on.
This is why Ontario yards, including ours, hold very little flat-rack stock at any given time. It is not because we do not want to. It is because the units that would justify yard space are bought by specialists before they reach us. The honest answer to “do you have flat-racks in stock” is almost always “we can source one for you, but we do not keep them sitting in the yard.”

Step 1: We ask what the cargo is
Before we quote anything, we want to know what is going on the flat-rack and where it is going. Nine out of ten times this is the conversation where we discover the buyer does not actually need a flat-rack. We send them to an open-top, a side-opener, or a 40HC, the deal closes the same week, and the buyer saves money. This is not us upselling away from flat-racks. Step 2: If the cargo really needs a flat-rack, we ask who the forwarder is
Most legitimate flat-rack purchases are downstream of a freight forwarder booking. Step 5: Delivery is on a separate trailer
A flat-rack does not ride on the same tilt-deck trailer that delivers dry boxes. It has to go on a flatbed because the corner castings have to be tied down differently. It can, but you would be doing far more work than starting from a standard dry box. A flat-rack has no walls and no roof. To make it weather-tight you would have to fabricate walls, a roof, and door openings from scratch, at which point you have built a new structure on a steel deck. You will pay less to start with a standard 20-foot or 40-foot dry box and modify openings into it. The only reason to start with a flat-rack would be if you needed an unusually high payload rating in the finished structure.
