Every container with a valid CSC plate carries a stamped maximum gross weight. The plate sits inside the left-hand door. A 20ft dry container is typically rated to 30,480 kg gross including the steel itself. A 40ft dry runs the same 30,480 kg rating in most cases. The tare is what subtracts from that ceiling: 2,300 kg on a 20ft, around 3,800 kg on a 40ft, and 4,000 kg on a 40ft high cube. The CSC plate is the legal source document the MTO officer references if a weight is disputed.

A loaded 40ft shipping container can weigh up to its CSC plate ceiling of 30,480 kg, made up of roughly 3,800 kg of empty container (the tare) plus payload. The empty steel box alone weighs more than most pickup trucks. ISO 6346 defines the marking standards, and the CSC plate inside the door carries the manufacturer tare. From there the math is straightforward. The CSC plate ceiling is the international shipping ceiling. Road transport in Ontario is governed by the axle weight rules above, not the box rating. So even though a 40ft dry container could legally hold 26,680 kg of payload at sea, you cannot move that on a standard tandem chassis on Ontario highways without violating the trailer tandem limit. The shipping ceiling and the road ceiling are different ceilings, and the road one wins inside the province. Knowing what is going into the box matters as much as knowing what the box weighs empty.

Which Container Chassis Do You Need: 2-Axle, Tandem, or Tridem?

The chassis under the container is the variable most buyers never think about. The right chassis depends on the combined weight of the bin plus its cargo. Once a 20ft loaded weight surpasses about 16,330 kg, or a 40ft loaded weight surpasses about 19,960 kg, a tri-axle chassis is typically required to stay legal.

Which chassis for which load

  • Two-axle chassis: Empty bins, light cargo (under 16,000 kg payload), short hauls inside Brantford or to adjacent municipalities. Lower equipment cost, lower fuel burn.

For a 20ft container, distribute heavy cargo so roughly 60 percent of payload weight sits in the forward half of the box and 40 percent in the rear half. At a Highway 401 scale house, a container load is weighed one axle group at a time and waved through only if every group reads legal. An Ontario truck driver with a container on the back hits the scale-house ramp at about 20 km/h and crawls onto the in-ground scale plate. The plate reads each axle group separately. Three numbers come back: steer, drive group, trailer group. On a fully equipped facility the readout breaks the groups out by individual axle, but legal limits are tracked at the group level.

For a container, that means uncoupling the chassis at a designated yard and waiting on a second chassis dispatch.

An overweight ticket is almost never cheaper than splitting the load up front. Section 125 fines scale with the kilograms over. A 500 kg overweight is a few hundred dollars.
