- Single-cone manual twistlock. The cheapest unit per corner in 2026. A tapered cone passes through both castings and is rotated 90 degrees by a side handle to lock. Best for permanent two-high stacks. Requires a person on top of the lower container, so plan for a fall-arrest setup. Tensile rating around 200 kN.
- Y-type semi-automatic twistlock. The yard workhorse, a step up in price from the manual cone but worth it. The cone is sprung so it engages automatically when the upper container sets down, then releases from the side by pulling a lanyard. The operator never climbs the box. Recommended for any active yard. Tensile rating around 250 kN.
- Fully automatic twistlock. Common on container ships and the priciest of the four types. Engages and disengages by vertical motion alone. Rare in yard use because release behaviour is calibrated to crane lift speed.
- Double-stacker rigid cone. The least expensive of the lot. A non-rotating cone used only between two containers that will never move. Holds the upper box laterally aligned but does not lock against uplift. Wrong choice in any Ontario site with real wind exposure.
The standard yard kit for a two-high stack is four Y-type semi-automatic twistlocks per layer interface, one per corner. For three-high in industrial use, doubled lashing rods plus four Y-type per layer is the baseline.
How High Can You Stack Containers: Two-High Yard or Three-High Industrial?
A corner casting is rated for eight high. The practical Ontario yard limit is two-high in most cases and three-high only with engineering. The constraint is everything around the casting, not the casting strength.
Two-high is the default for retail and small-business yards. Two empty 20 ft or 40 ft boxes stack to roughly 5.2 metres, well inside what a 25 to 30 ton forklift can place. Twistlocks at all four corners are mandatory. Compacted gravel levelled within 6 mm corner to corner is sufficient. Roughly 90 percent of yards we deliver to stack two-high without further engineering.
Three-high is industrial 3PL territory. The top corner lands at roughly 7.8 metres, into reach-stacker or crane territory. Wind load on the top container increases with the square of the lever arm, so a three-high stack sees roughly four times the overturning moment of a two-high in the same wind. Brampton and Mississauga 3PL operators run three-high routinely on engineered concrete pads with double lashing rods to ground anchors; the added engineering, anchorage, and lift requirements raise the per-column cost well above a two-high outfit. For a retail yard, two-high is almost always the right answer.
Four-high and above is port and rail only. Terminals in Hamilton and Toronto run four- and five-high on engineered slabs with crane straddles. We have never delivered a private-yard stack above three-high in southern Ontario.
Mixed 20 ft and 40 ft stacks need attention. A 40 ft on top of a single 20 ft is a cantilever and is unsafe at any height because the 40 ft corner castings sit at the 40 ft corners, not at the 20 ft footprint. The right answer is two 20 ft boxes side by side with a 40 ft spanning the top, plus a centre support since the inboard 40 ft corners sit above the gap. Most yards stack same-size on same-size to avoid the issue.
Why Does Wind Load, Not Vertical Load, Limit an Ontario Container Stack?
Wind load is the controlling force on a stacked container in Ontario, because the corner castings carry far more vertical weight than any yard stack ever applies. At a design pressure of 0.42 kPa for southern Ontario open terrain at 30 metres above grade, the lateral force on the top container lands around 12 kN. That force generates an overturning moment about the lower container base that the twistlocks resist in tension. With four Y-type semi-automatic locks at 250 kN each, the uplift on the downwind locks is roughly 6 to 8 kN in worst case, an order of magnitude below rating.
The number gets less comfortable at three-high. The lateral force is the same, but the lever arm doubles and the overturning moment doubles. Uplift on the downwind locks climbs to roughly 18 to 25 kN per corner, still below rating, but the base moment climbs into a range where the pad mass must resist by weight alone or by anchorage. A 200 mm concrete pad at the container footprint weighs roughly 13 to 15 tonnes, which resists three-high overturning only at the upper margin of design wind. In Lake Ontario shoreline exposure or clear-fetch rural sites, ground anchors are the honest answer.
The practical implication: twistlocks alone handle two-high anywhere in Ontario. Three-high in protected terrain handles on twistlocks and pad mass. Three-high in exposed terrain needs ground anchors and lashing rods.
What Foundation Does a Stacked Container Yard Need?
The pad under a stacked column carries roughly twice (two-high) or three times (three-high) the load of a single container. A 20 ft cargo-worthy weighs 2.2 tonnes tare, a 40 ft weighs 3.8 tonnes. A two-high column of fully loaded 40 ft boxes lands at 60 to 80 tonnes; the same column empty lands at 8 to 15 tonnes. The four yard-grade options that work in Ontario:
- Compacted Granular A gravel, 200 to 300 mm depth. The yard standard for two-high stacks. The pad is graded level within 6 mm corner to corner, the box sets directly on the gravel through 150 by 150 mm pressure-treated timber pads under each corner. This is the lowest pad cost per stacked column of the four options.
- Reinforced concrete pad, 200 mm thick, rebar at 300 mm on centre. The right pad for three-high or any permanent stack, sized to the full container footprint. Ground anchors cast into the slab add to the cost per anchor but are the honest answer in exposed terrain.
- Concrete spot footings under each corner casting. An economical option for two-high where a full slab is wasteful. Four spot footings, 600 by 600 by 600 mm deep, lock the corner-casting load into firm soil at frost depth (1.2 to 1.5 metres in southern Ontario). It costs less than a full slab while still tying the load to firm ground.
- Helical piers under each corner casting. The premium option in expansive clay or organic fill sites. Four helical piers per column, installed by a contractor, carry the highest pad cost of the four but solve settlement on poor soils. The watch-out on all four options: the pad has to be level when the first container sets down. A 25 mm dip at one corner translates to a 50 mm offset at the upper-box twistlock interface, which puts the cone into shear and works the casting hole oversize. Level matters more than thickness.
What Crane or Forklift Do You Need, and in What Stacking Sequence?
Lift equipment is the second-largest cost item after the pad. Three options cover most southern Ontario yards.
- Heavy forklift (Hyster or Taylor 25 to 36 ton). Places two-high cleanly with a container handler attachment; three-high at the upper edge of mast range. Rented by the day with an operator, it is the most economical of the three lift options.
- Reach-stacker (Kalmar or Hyster 33 to 45 ton). Picks from top corner castings via integrated spreader. Handles two-high and three-high cleanly. The mid-tier day rate, and the 3PL standard.
- Mobile crane (50 to 80 ton hydraulic boom). The highest day rate of the three, since it comes with an operator and a rigger. Right answer for one-time stacks, tight sites, or elevated pads.

How Often Should You Inspect a Stacked Container Yard?
A stacked yard is not set-and-forget. The five-minute daily walk-around catches failure modes before they get expensive.
- Visual on every twistlock. The release lanyard should hang straight down. A lanyard at an angle means the lock has rotated partially open. Reseat.
- Corner casting alignment. Sight down the side from a few metres away. A horizontal offset over 10 to 15 mm indicates a casting wearing oversize or a settled corner.
- Pad settlement. After every freeze-thaw and heavy rain, check the lower container is still level corner to corner within 10 mm. Settlement is the most common failure mode in clay yards.
- Door swing on the lower box. A racked lower container shows up first at the doors. Binding doors mean uneven corner load.
- Rust at the lower-box top rail. Water tracks down from the upper box. Annual touch-up paint extends life materially.
- Lashing rod tension on three-high stacks. Turnbuckles loosen over time. Snug quarterly.
- Snow load on the upper roof. Brush off accumulations above 200 mm if drifting is concentrated at one end.
Failure modes are gradual, not sudden. A twistlock does not let go in a single windstorm. A casting wears, a pad settles, a lock rotates partially, alignment offsets, and the stack tells you for months before it becomes an emergency. Daily eyes catch the early signs.
