ISO shipping containers are engineered to support stacks of 9 fully loaded containers on a ship, which means roughly 192 tonnes of vertical load on the corner castings. A 40HC full of water is about 32 tonnes including the steel shell. The corrugated walls are the strongest face of a container; the water pushes outward against that corrugation rather than against the doors. The structural margin is generous when the footing supports the corner castings and the top rails are not cut through.
What’s the lifespan of a properly built container pool?
25 to 40 years with proper coating maintenance, comparable to a quality vinyl-liner inground pool. The steel hull lasts essentially indefinitely if the coating system is maintained: inspect annually, address any coating lift before it spreads, and refresh the topcoat every 10 to 15 years. Vinyl-lined container pools follow the standard vinyl liner replacement cycle of 10 to 15 years.
