Trek Pools followed from Indiana. By 2026 the model is established: a 20ft or 40ft steel box, lined, plumbed, heated, and dropped onto a reinforced pad. Swim within a single day of delivery on the pre-built path, swim within a long summer of weekends on the DIY path.
What nobody on Pinterest tells you is the structural side. A 20ft container filled with water carries roughly 7.5 tonnes of liquid plus its own 2.3 tonne tare, plus swimmers, plus surrounding pressure forces the steel walls outward in a way they were never designed to take. The corner posts handle stacking compression beautifully. The side walls handle hydrostatic pressure poorly. Get the foundation and the reinforcement right and you have a 25-year pool. Get either one wrong and you have a wet basement and a phone call to your insurer.

That static load, sitting on a 30 square metre footprint through repeated freeze and thaw, is why the foundation is the most important decision in the build.
The water weight is the part every DIY guide skips and every structural engineer leads with. A 20ft shipping container has internal dimensions of roughly 5.9m long by 2.35m wide by 2.39m tall, which is 33.2 cubic metres of internal volume. Fill it to within 30cm of the top for swimming and you have about 28 cubic metres of water. Water weighs 1,000 kg per cubic metre. That is 28,000 kg or 7.5 imperial tons / 28 metric tonnes of static load sitting in your backyard.
A 40ft container holds roughly 58 cubic metres of water at swimming depth. Call it 58 tonnes. For comparison, a small SUV weighs 1.8 tonnes. You are placing the equivalent of fifteen Toyota RAV4s, distributed across a 30 square metre footprint, on whatever you decided to build under it. Why containers handle compression but not lateral pressure
Shipping containers are engineered to stack nine high when loaded onto an ocean vessel. The corner castings and corner posts carry that vertical load down to the deck. The side walls, by contrast, are corrugated 14-gauge Corten steel rated for the wind force of an ocean crossing but never for hydrostatic pressure from inside. Water at the bottom of a 2.4m deep pool exerts roughly 24 kPa of outward pressure on the side walls. Without internal bracing or earth backfill, the walls bow outward and the welded seams fail along the bottom rail. Every credible container pool fabricator adds either external steel bracing, internal vertical I-beams, or full earth backfill (sunken installation) to manage this.
The foundation answer in Ontario is one of two paths. A reinforced concrete pad of at least 6 inches with rebar spacing at 30cm or tighter, sized to extend 30cm beyond the container footprint on all sides, is the minimum for an above-ground container pool on undisturbed soil. The pad needs to sit on compacted granular base below frost line, which in most of southern Ontario is 1.2m. For a sunken or partially sunken pool, the better path is helical piers at the four corners and mid-span, with a reinforced grade beam tying them together. Helical piers transfer the load to undisturbed soil below frost depth without the freeze-thaw heave that a slab can suffer if it isn’t engineered correctly.

DIY means you buy the container, pour the pad, do the structural reinforcement yourself or hire a welder, install the liner, hire an ESA-certified electrician for the pump and heater circuit, and live with the result. A DIY build typically lands well below a comparable pre-built pool, with the final figure depending on whether you have the welding skills, the equipment access, and the patience for a six-month project across two summer seasons.
Honest decision framework
- Buy pre-built if: you want a turnkey product with a real warranty, you don’t have welding experience, you value time over money, or you want resale value (pre-built pools transfer at near their original value; DIY pools often do not).
- Go DIY if: you have a welding background or a friend who does, you’re comfortable with a 200-hour project across two summers, you understand the structural engineering involved, you can absorb the cost of a mistake, and you genuinely enjoy the build as much as the swim.
- Don’t do either if: your lot can’t accommodate the 28-tonne load, the water table or soil makes the foundation work uneconomical, or you wanted a pool but really want a hot tub (different product, different price, different physics).

A container pool liner protects the steel shell from chlorine corrosion, and there are three credible choices: a vinyl insert, an epoxy paint system, or a polyurea spray-on coating. The container is steel, and steel and chlorinated water are not friends over the long term. Every container pool needs an interior surface that protects the steel from chlorine corrosion and gives swimmers something that isn’t sharp Corten edges. There are three credible approaches, in ascending order of cost and durability.
The three liner paths
Vinyl liner insert (most affordable, DIY-friendly). Same vinyl liner technology used in traditional vinyl-liner backyard pools, custom-fitted to the rectangular container footprint. Comes in 20-mil or 28-mil thickness. Replacement cycle 7 to 12 years depending on chemistry maintenance and UV exposure on uncovered sections. Most affordable; easiest to repair; the downside is the visible seams and the fact that any sharp object dropped in can puncture it.
Epoxy paint system (mid-range, DIY-capable). Two-part epoxy designed for pool interior surfaces, applied over an etched and primed steel base. Looks like a painted concrete pool. Lifespan 5 to 8 years before re-coat. Cheaper than spray-on, more durable than vinyl in terms of puncture resistance, but the prep work is brutal and the chemistry intolerance is high (one season of bad pH and you’re re-coating).
Polyurea or polyurethane spray-on coating (premium, professional only). Industrial-grade spray-on coating applied by certified applicators, same product category used for truck bed liners and water tank interiors. Cures in hours, bonds chemically to prepared steel, lasts 15 to 25 years. The pre-built fabricators almost all use this approach because it’s the only one with a warranty math that works for them. Most expensive; most durable; requires a certified applicator (not a DIY job).
For DIY builders the vinyl insert is usually the right answer. The cost is contained, the failure mode is gradual rather than catastrophic, and the repair is straightforward. For pre-built buyers the spray-on coating is a large part of what the premium buys; the equipment, the structural work, and the spray-on liner together account for most of the cost differential between a “pool in a box” and a “container in a backyard.”
What filtration, heater, and electrical does a container pool need?
A container pool needs the same equipment set as any backyard pool: a pump, a filter, a heater, automated chemistry, and an ESA-certified electrical hookup. The pool equipment side is closer to a traditional backyard pool than people expect. You need a pump, a filter (sand, cartridge, or DE), a heater (gas or electric heat pump), automated chemistry (chlorine or salt-cell chlorination), and an ESA-certified electrical hookup for all of it. The Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy lines are the dominant brands and most pool supply shops in Ontario carry them.
The container pool difference is the equipment bay. Pre-built fabricators integrate the equipment into the container itself, usually in a partitioned-off section at one end with its own access door, the kind of partitioning, venting, and door cut-ins that fall under the conversion work our crew handles at the yard before a box ever leaves Brantford. DIY builders typically locate the equipment in a separate enclosure beside the pool, plumbed through the container wall via 1.5″ or 2″ PVC bulkhead fittings. Either approach works; the integrated bay is cleaner and more weather-protected, the external enclosure is easier to service and easier to upgrade.

The honest call: tier 2 is the right answer for almost every Ontario backyard container pool. Above-ground or sunken: which container pool layout is right?
A container pool can sit above grade, fully sunken into the ground, or partially sunken, and most southern Ontario backyards land on the partially sunken option. The visual decision a lot of buyers fixate on is whether the container sits on top of the ground or in the ground. Both work, and the cost and structural reality of each is different.
Above-ground (full or partial). The container sits on the pad, ladder or stairs lead up to a deck that wraps the perimeter, and the steel exterior is visible. This is the Modpools default and the cheapest to install because there is no excavation. The exterior of the container can be left as factory paint, painted to match your house, or clad in cedar slats for a more residential look. Cottage-country buyers tend to choose the cedar cladding to blend the steel into a treed lot; suburban buyers more often leave it painted.
Sunken (full inground). A hole is excavated to the depth of the container minus a 60cm or so freeboard, the container drops in, and the deck wraps flush with the surrounding grade. The result looks like a traditional rectangular inground pool. The cost differential is for excavation, fill management, additional structural engineering (the side walls now have lateral earth pressure on the outside helping the hydrostatic pressure on the inside, which actually simplifies the engineering), and finished deck work.
Partially sunken (the most common Ontario choice). The container drops into a 1.2m to 1.5m excavation, leaving 30 to 90cm of steel exposed above grade. The exposed steel gets clad or painted, the deck wraps at the exposed-steel height, and the result looks like a slightly elevated traditional pool. This is the right answer for most southern Ontario lots because it manages frost depth without committing to a full inground excavation.
The Ontario freeze-thaw factor
Container pools that sit above grade through an Ontario winter have to be drained and winterized completely; any standing water in the plumbing freezes, expands, and cracks fittings. Partially sunken pools get some thermal protection from the surrounding earth but still need full winterization. Sunken pools with sufficient depth (below frost line) can sometimes hold winter water with the right chemistry and a heated cover, the same approach used by traditional inground pools across the province. The freeze-thaw cycle is the single biggest determinant of container pool lifespan in Canada, and Modpools, Trek, and the rest of the credible fabricators all build for it.

How do you winterize a container pool in Ontario?
Winterizing a container pool in Ontario means lowering the water level, blowing out and protecting the plumbing, storing the pump and salt cell indoors, and covering the pool with a solid winter cover. The Ontario swimming season is roughly mid-May to mid-September if you don’t heat, mid-April to mid-October if you do. Outside that window the pool needs to be winterized properly or you’ll be replacing equipment every spring.
The container-specific winterization steps:
- Lower water level below the return and skimmer lines. For an above-ground container pool this means draining to about 75% of summer level. For sunken or partial-sunken, the level can stay higher because the surrounding earth provides thermal mass.
- Blow out all plumbing with a shop vac or air compressor, then add non-toxic propylene glycol antifreeze to the lines. Same procedure as a traditional inground pool.
- Remove and store the pump, filter cartridge, and salt cell indoors. The heater can stay outside if it’s a heat pump (no water inside) or a properly drained gas heater.

- If you have a small budget and want a real pool experience. A used above-ground vinyl pool from a pool dealer installs for a fraction of any container build. It won’t last as long as a container pool, but if your budget ceiling is tight, the math simply doesn’t work for containers.
- If you wanted a hot tub. Hot tubs arrive fully installed, are turn-key, and in most cases don’t require a poured pad or an electrical service upgrade. If the goal is hot water and jet massage rather than swimming, the container pool isn’t the right product.
- If you’re not committed to the maintenance. A container pool needs the same weekly chemistry checks, weekly skimming, monthly filter cleans, and seasonal opens/closes as any other pool. The “pool in a box” marketing doesn’t eliminate the maintenance. It eliminates the construction time.
When a container pool is the right answer, it’s a beautiful product. When it isn’t, talking yourself into one is an expensive way to get the wrong backyard.
What grade of container do you need for a pool?
A pool project needs a one-trip 20ft or 40ft container, the newest grade available, not a used Cargo Worthy or Wind & Watertight unit. The container at the centre of the build is the part that lives in chlorinated water for 25 years, so grade matters more here than in almost any other use. One-trip means the container made a single journey from the manufacturer (typically China or Vietnam) loaded with cargo to offset the shipping cost. Essentially new condition: original factory paint, no rust, doors that operate cleanly, minor cosmetic wear from one ocean crossing. The 25-year functional life starts now.
Cargo Worthy or Wind & Watertight grades, the used grades we sell at lower price points, are wrong for pool projects. Surface rust, paint variance, and small dents on those used grades become corrosion sites once the container is in contact with chlorinated water and freeze-thaw weather.
