The crane only comes into the picture when a fence, a retaining wall, a tight side yard, or a building stands between the truck and the final position, so the container has to be lifted up and set down over the obstacle.

It helps to picture the tilt-deck first, because the crane is the answer to what the tilt-deck cannot do. A tilt-deck delivery is a roll-off motion: the truck needs a long, straight, firm pull-out to slide the bin off the back of the tilting bed. As a working guide, a 20ft container usually wants roughly 75 to 100 feet of straight pull-out, and a 40ft wants roughly 120 to 130 feet, with about 12 feet of width and 14 to 16 feet of overhead clearance while the bed is tilted (a high cube sits taller, so it wants a little more). When that straight run exists, the approach is not too steep for the tilting bed, and the container can land where the truck can reach, no crane is needed, and the delivery stays simple.

The fenced backyard is the classic case where it breaks down. The truck can get to the front of the property, but a six-foot wood fence, a brick wall, or a row of mature trees sits between the driveway and the patch of grass where you want the bin. The tilt-deck has nowhere to roll it. A crane parks out front, extends its boom up and over the fence, and lowers the container onto the spot. A crane lift is priced on the machine and the time, and the machine is chosen to match your site.   • Reach (radius): How far the crane has to extend its boom horizontally to clear the fence and reach the spot. This is usually the single biggest driver, because reach decides crane size.
  • Container weight: A 20ft empty container is far lighter than a loaded 40ft high cube. Heavier loads at the same reach demand a larger machine.
  • Lift height: How high the boom must raise the bin to clear the fence, wall, or roofline before swinging it over.
  • Ground conditions: Firm, level, drained ground for the outriggers keeps the job straightforward. Soft, sloped, or wet ground adds cribbing, pads, and time.
  • Access for the crane itself: Where the crane can legally and safely park, how far it sits from the drop spot, and what is overhead (power lines, trees, eaves).

Crane capacity is not one number. Every crane works to a load chart, and the rule on that chart is the heart of why reach drives cost: the farther out the crane has to reach, the less it can safely lift. Capacity and reach move in opposite directions. As the load swings out away from the crane’s centre of rotation, the maximum weight the machine can hold drops, and it drops fast.

The numbers make it vivid. A mobile crane that can hold around 50,000 pounds at a tight 10-foot radius might safely manage only about 15,000 pounds once that same load is 50 feet out. A crane does not balance on its tires during a lift. It plants its outriggers, the legs that extend out from the body, and those outriggers carry the whole weight of the crane plus the load through a few small steel feet. That is a concentrated force pressing into your ground, and if the ground gives, the lift is not safe. The industry standard from OSHA is plain: outriggers must not be used unless the ground is firm, drained, and level enough to take the load.

The pressure under an outrigger foot is simply the load divided by the area of the pad it sits on, which is why operators slide cribbing or composite pads under the feet to spread the weight over a wider footprint. The ground’s ability to take that pressure varies a lot. Solid rock or sound concrete can carry well over 10,000 pounds per square foot. Compacted gravel handles roughly 4,000 to 6,000 pounds per square foot. Firm clay might take only 2,000 to 3,000. Soft or wet soil can be as low as 500 to 1,000 pounds per square foot, which is not much when an outrigger is concentrating tens of thousands of pounds onto it.
