A tilt deck (also called a roll-off or tilt-bed) is the most common way to place a shipping container in Ontario. Roughly nine out of ten Van Blanc deliveries go down this way. It is fast, gentle on the container, and cheaper than the crane alternatives. It also has hard limits: if your site cannot give us the four numbers below, the truck does not unload, the trip becomes a redelivery charge, and nobody is happy. How does tilt deck delivery actually work at the curb?
Tilt deck delivery slides a shipping container off the back of a hydraulic trailer onto the ground. The truck backs into position, the rams lift the front of the trailer to roughly 40 degrees, and a winch cable plays the container off the rear end, landing it flat on your pad in 15 to 30 minutes. One truck, no crane.
The truck arrives with the container already loaded flat on a gooseneck trailer. The driver pulls past your placement spot, then backs the trailer up to where you want the container to land. He chocks the wheels, drops the front legs, and walks the property line one more time to confirm there is nothing in the swing path.
Hydraulic rams behind the cab raise the front of the trailer. The bed tips back, the container nose lifts skyward, and the rear of the container makes contact with the ground. With the trailer angled at roughly 40 degrees, the driver eases the truck forward. A heavy-duty winch cable plays out under load so the container slides off slowly, end over end, until it is sitting flat on your gravel pad or driveway. The trailer levels out, the cable retracts, and the driver pulls away.
Total time on site, once positioned: 15 to 30 minutes for a 20 ft, 25 to 45 minutes for a 40 ft. The container ends up where the rear of the trailer was when the tilt started. Why the placement direction is fixed
A tilt deck slides the container straight back along the truck’s line of travel. The container’s long axis ends up parallel to the truck. You cannot rotate the container during the tilt. If you want the container doors facing east, the truck has to back in from the west. Picture a 65 ft truck and trailer combination. The cab sits at the front. The container starts on the trailer behind the cab. When the rams lift and the trailer tips, the container slides backward off the trailer. The driver eases the truck forward to keep the angle steady. By the time the container is on the ground, the cab has moved forward by roughly the length of the container plus a few feet of clearance. For a 20 ft container, that is 80 ft of straight asphalt or compacted gravel from the original truck position to where the cab ends up after the slide. For a 40 ft, it is 120 ft.

What does 80,000 lb of ground bearing mean for your driveway?
Ground bearing is the weight your surface has to carry on delivery day. A loaded tilt deck truck and trailer weighs in the range of 45,000 to 80,000 lb depending on the rig and the container. Most concrete driveways and asphalt aprons handle this without flinching: 4 inches of properly placed concrete or 3 inches of asphalt on a compacted base routinely supports much heavier vehicles every day (think garbage trucks at 30 to 35 tonnes loaded).
The places we get nervous are interlock pavers, decorative stamped concrete, and unrepaired older driveways where you can see hairline cracks running through the slab. Interlock especially can settle under a single point load if the bedding sand is not properly compacted. We have seen drivers refuse to position on interlock when the customer cannot tell us how old the install is or who laid it. That is an honest call by our crew, not a sales tactic.
The sod and grass problem
Wet grass is the most common reason a tilt deck delivery gets aborted in Ontario, especially from late March through May and again in October and November. What goes wrong on Ontario delivery days?
The things that go wrong on a tilt deck delivery day are almost always site-access problems, not container problems. Thirty years of running tilt deck deliveries across Ontario teaches you the failure modes. Almost all of them are preventable with the site assessment up front. The list below is the running tally our drivers report back to the yard.
- Overhead wires not measured. Hydro and Bell lines at 12 to 13 ft block the tilt. Cable runs to the house are even lower. The customer assumed the wires were higher than they actually are. Fix: measure with a long stick before booking, or switch to HIAB.
- The gate or fence is too narrow. A 10 ft gate cannot pass a 12 ft trailer. Painted yard fences, decorative pillars at the driveway entrance, and brick mailbox bases all reduce the effective width. Fix: send a photo of the entry point with a tape measure visible.
- The placement spot is reachable but the truck cannot turn. Long narrow lanes that dead-end at the placement spot trap the truck. Drivers will not back a 65 ft rig out a winding 300 ft lane. Fix: identify a turn-around space or accept HIAB.
- Wet ground. Covered above. Most common in spring thaw and fall rains.
- Recent rain on a gravel pad. A new gravel pad with rain pooled on top is not the same as a compacted dry pad. We sometimes ask for a 48-hour dry window after pad construction.
- Customer not on site. We can deliver without the customer present if placement is unambiguous, but for anything with multiple possible positions we need someone with sign-off authority on site. Cancelling a delivery because the homeowner went to work that morning is the dumbest preventable cost in this whole business.
- Neighbour parked over the approach line. See the Brantford suburban example above. Knock on the door the day before.
- The placement spot moved since the photos. A pile of fill, a parked trailer, or a new garden bed appears in the swing path between the photo review and delivery day. The driver arrives to a different site than the one we scoped. Fix: keep the landing zone and the approach clear from the day you send the photos through to delivery.
