A loaded tilt-deck rig, meaning the truck, the trailer, and the container together, can run roughly 30,000 to 40,000 pounds depending on the size and grade of the bin. That weight rides on tires while it rolls, which a healthy driveway handles fine. The pinch point is the container itself. Once it is on the ground, its full weight sits on four steel corner castings, each about the size of a fist. That is a concentrated load, and concentrated loads are what mark a surface.

The container lands at ground level. When site access allows a tilt-deck delivery, no crane is needed, which keeps the job simpler and the surface contact predictable.
The clearance a tilt-deck needs
Tilt-deck delivery is a roll-off motion, so the truck needs room to pull forward in a straight line while the bin slides off. As a working guide, a 20ft container usually needs roughly 75 to 100 feet of straight pull-out, and a 40ft needs roughly 120 to 130 feet. Plan on about 12 feet of width for the truck, and 14 to 16 feet of overhead clearance while the bed is tilted (a high cube sits taller, so it wants a little more). These are not rigid promises. Why does this matter for your driveway? Because the longer the straight, firm, level run the truck has, the less the rig has to fight for traction or grind its tires in one spot. Point Loads: Why Four Small Steel Feet Matter
A point load is weight concentrated on a small area instead of spread out, and a shipping container is a textbook example. The corrugated walls, the roof, and the floor crossmembers do not carry the vertical weight down to the ground. The four corner castings do, sitting on top of the four corner posts. So a 20ft container that weighs a few thousand pounds empty pushes that entire weight through four contact patches, each only a few square inches.
The castings themselves are tough. Container corner fittings are cast and machined from steel in the ASTM A216 family, with a minimum yield strength around 40,000 psi, which is why they survive being stacked many containers high on a cargo ship. The steel is not the worry. The worry is the surface underneath, because that small steel foot can press into asphalt or an aging concrete slab the same way a stiletto heel marks a soft floor while a flat shoe does not.

Spreading the load is the whole game. Set a corner casting straight onto warm asphalt and a few square inches of steel carry thousands of pounds, so the pressure at that spot is very high. Slip a sheet of three-quarter-inch plywood or a length of timber under the same corner and you spread that load across a much larger area, which drops the pressure dramatically. The bigger and more spread out the support, the less chance of a mark. It is the cheapest insurance on the whole delivery, and we bring it.
When the Risk Is Real
The risk of marking or cracking a driveway is real in three situations. None of them are mysterious, and all of them are manageable once you know to look for them.
Hot asphalt in summer. Asphalt is a flexible surface that softens as it heats. On a hot Ontario afternoon a dark driveway can sit well above the air temperature, and once asphalt warms past roughly 30 degrees Celsius it gives under heavy concentrated loads. A corner casting on soft asphalt can press in and leave a permanent dimple, and tires can scuff or rut. This is the single most common cause of summer driveway marks. The fix is easy: book delivery for a cool morning rather than the heat of the day, and put plywood under the corners.
Edge loading. The middle of a slab or an asphalt pad is the strongest part. The edges are the weakest, because there is nothing beside them to share the load and the base under the edge is thinner and less supported. Set a heavy corner casting right on the lip of a driveway and you are loading the one spot most likely to chip, crack, or crumble. Placement that keeps the corners on the solid interior of the surface, away from edges and seams, removes most of this risk.
Older or already-cracked surfaces. An aging concrete driveway with hairline cracks, or asphalt that has started to spider and crumble, has already lost strength. - We walk the route first. The driver looks at the approach, the slope, the edges, the surface, and the placement spot before anything moves. If something looks risky, you hear about it before the bin comes off the truck, not after.
