A shipping container delivery clearance check takes five minutes standing in your own driveway with your head tilted back, and it saves a wasted trip, a re-book, and the awkward call where the driver tells you the bin cannot land where you wanted it.

A standard 8 foot 6 inch container delivered on a tilt-deck trailer reaches roughly 14 feet at its highest point as the bed tilts up, and the working number drivers prefer is 16 feet to give the steel room to clear cleanly. Anything hanging lower than that, a hydro line, a tree branch, a carport roof, a building eave, a basketball hoop, a gateway arch, becomes a height restriction.
This is the part buyers underestimate, because a container sitting on the ground is only chest-high to a person. The height comes from the delivery, not the container. During tilt-off the rear of the bed climbs into the air so the container can slide down to the ground, and for a few seconds the top corner of that bin is two storeys up. The branch you walk under every day without thinking is suddenly in the way.

Start with the branches, because they are easy. If a limb hangs into the 14-to-16-foot delivery zone over your landing spot, trim it back before delivery day. Handle the trimming about a week ahead, not the morning the truck arrives. Branches also matter after the bin lands: a container parked under a mature canopy collects leaf litter in the door tracks, which traps moisture against the seals and shortens their life. Clearing the path for delivery often fixes the long-term problem at the same time.
Hydro lines are a legal clearance, not a judgment call
In Ontario, the Construction Projects regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (O. Reg. 213/91, section 188) sets minimum approach distances that equipment and loads must keep from energized overhead lines, and those distances grow with the voltage. A common service-line minimum is 3 metres (about 10 feet) plus allowance for the line swinging in the wind, and high-voltage transmission lines require far more. The honest answer for a homeowner is simple: if there is any overhead line near the landing spot, call us about it, and if there is any doubt, your local hydro distributor will tell you the exact clearance for your line. A container touching a live line is life-threatening. We do not guess, and you should not either.

What happens during tilt-off (why the container goes up so high)
Tilt-off, sometimes called tilt-bed or roll-off delivery, is how most ground-level shipping containers land. The trailer backs the container into position, the driver chocks the rear of the bin against the ground, and then the hydraulic bed tilts up at the front. As the bed rises, the container slides down its rails and settles onto the ground while the truck eases forward out from underneath. The bin ends up sitting flat at ground level, exactly where a storage or workshop container should be. No crane, no lifting fee, when the site allows it.
The reason tilt-off needs so much overhead is the geometry of that lift. To slide a 20 or 40 foot box off the back, the front of the bed has to climb high, and that swings the leading top corner of the container up into the air. That moment is when a low branch or eave gets clipped. It is also why the straight-line space behind the truck matters so much, which is the next measurement.

A tilt-deck drop is fast and clean on an open site. The trade-off is that it asks for more space than people expect, both above and behind. That is the whole reason this page exists: so you know what the truck needs before it leaves Brantford.
Width and straight pull-out length your driver needs
Overhead is the clearance buyers forget. Width and length are the ones they underestimate. A loaded delivery truck and trailer is a long, heavy rig, and tilt-off only works in a straight line, because the truck has to drive forward out from under the container as it slides off.
For width, plan on about 12 feet of clear path as the minimum, and 14 feet is comfortable. That is gate width, the gap between the house and the fence, the space between two parked vehicles, anything the truck has to thread. Side mirrors, hydro meters and downspouts all live in that width.

The narrow side-yard delivery
A homeowner in a Brantford subdivision wants a 20 foot bin in the back corner of the yard for a renovation. The gate is 11 feet wide and a hydro service line runs from the pole to the house right over the only approach. The lot is fine at ground level and looks open, but the tilt-deck cannot raise the bin under that line and cannot fit the gate. The fix is a crane truck that sets the container over the fence from the driveway, or a different landing spot the line does not cross. Knowing this before ordering turns a failed delivery into a planned one.
Does a high-cube container need more clearance?
Yes. A high-cube container is one foot taller than a standard container, 9 feet 6 inches versus 8 feet 6 inches in exterior height, so it needs about a foot more overhead clearance all the way through the tilt-off arc. Firm, dry ground: the weight nobody pictures
Overhead clearance gets the container off the truck. Firm ground is what lets the truck get to the spot in the first place. A loaded shipping container delivery truck weighs tens of thousands of pounds, the rig plus the steel, and all of that weight has to drive over your ground and stop on it during the tilt.
Dry, compacted ground carries that weight. Soft ground does not. Spring thaw, a soaked lawn, fresh fill that has not settled, or loose new gravel can let a truck sink, rut, or get stuck, and a stuck truck on a tilt is a bad day for everyone. Gravel, packed dirt, asphalt and concrete are the friends here. Saturated grass and soft soil are the enemies. A slope works against you too: tilt-off wants ground that is close to level so the container slides off square instead of skewing.
Time the delivery for after the ground has had a chance to dry, give the truck a firm path in, and the drop goes the way it should. How to walk your own site before delivery day
Five minutes outside saves the re-book. Here is the walk we wish every buyer did before ordering. It is the same sequence our dispatcher runs in their head when you describe your site over the phone.
The pre-delivery clearance walk
- Stand on the landing spot and look straight up. Is there 14 to 16 feet of clear air (15 to 17 for a high-cube)? Note any hydro line, branch, eave, or wire crossing above.
- Trace the approach. Walk the path the truck will take from the road to the spot. Anything overhead along that whole path counts, not just over the landing area.
- Measure the narrowest pinch. Gate, fence gap, space between parked cars. You want about 12 feet, 14 is comfortable.
- Pace the straight run. Roughly 75 to 100 feet of straight pull-out behind the spot for a 20 foot bin, 120 to 130 feet for a 40 foot. It has to be straight.
- Check the ground. Is the approach firm and dry enough to carry a heavy truck? Near level for the drop? Soft, soaked, or freshly filled ground needs time or a different plan.
- Flag the hydro line. Any overhead line near the spot is a call to us, and if needed, to your local distributor. Never eyeball power-line clearance.
If your site clears all six, you are almost certainly a clean tilt-deck drop. If it stumbles on one or two, you are not out of options: that is exactly what the crane is for, and it is worth a phone call to figure out the cheapest, cleanest way to land your bin.
Worth the drive, and worth the phone call

A crane does not need the long straight pull-out, because it is not driving out from under anything. It can set a bin over a fence, into a tight courtyard, onto piers, or onto a spot a tilt-deck could never back into.
The catch is overhead. A crane still has to clear whatever is above, and the boom itself reaches high, so power lines and branches matter just as much, sometimes more. A crane is the right call when the site is too tight, too narrow, or too obstructed at ground level for tilt-off, but it is not a way around an overhead hydro line. The line is still the line.
