Anything hanging lower than that, a hydro line, a tree branch, a carport roof, a building eave, a basketball hoop, a gateway arch, becomes a height restriction.

This is the part buyers underestimate, because a container sitting on the ground is only chest-high to a person. The height comes from the delivery, not the container. During tilt-off the rear of the bed climbs into the air so the container can slide down to the ground, and for a few seconds the top corner of that bin is two storeys up. The branch you walk under every day without thinking is suddenly in the way.

The number that matters: clearance above the landing spot

What happens during tilt-off (why the container goes up so high)

Tilt-off, sometimes called tilt-bed or roll-off delivery, is how most ground-level shipping containers land. The trailer backs the container into position, the driver chocks the rear of the bin against the ground, and then the hydraulic bed tilts up at the front. As the bed rises, the container slides down its rails and settles onto the ground while the truck eases forward out from underneath. The bin ends up sitting flat at ground level, exactly where a storage or workshop container should be. No crane, no lifting fee, when the site allows it.

The reason tilt-off needs so much overhead is the geometry of that lift. To slide a 20 or 40 foot box off the back, the front of the bed has to climb high, and that swings the leading top corner of the container up into the air. That moment is when a low branch or eave gets clipped. It is also why the straight-line space behind the truck matters so much, which is the next measurement.

Yes. Firm, dry ground: the weight nobody pictures

Overhead clearance gets the container off the truck. Firm ground is what lets the truck get to the spot in the first place. A loaded shipping container delivery truck weighs tens of thousands of pounds, the rig plus the steel, and all of that weight has to drive over your ground and stop on it during the tilt.

Dry, compacted ground carries that weight. Soft ground does not. Spring thaw, a soaked lawn, fresh fill that has not settled, or loose new gravel can let a truck sink, rut, or get stuck, and a stuck truck on a tilt is a bad day for everyone. Gravel, packed dirt, asphalt and concrete are the friends here. Saturated grass and soft soil are the enemies. A slope works against you too: tilt-off wants ground that is close to level so the container slides off square instead of skewing.

Time the delivery for after the ground has had a chance to dry, give the truck a firm path in, and the drop goes the way it should. When a crane is the answer instead of a tilt-deck

A crane truck, the kind with a HIAB knuckleboom arm, lifts the container straight up and sets it down, instead of sliding it off the back. That changes the clearance math entirely. A crane does not need the long straight pull-out, because it is not driving out from under anything. It can set a bin over a fence, into a tight courtyard, onto piers, or onto a spot a tilt-deck could never back into.

The catch is overhead. A crane still has to clear whatever is above, and the boom itself reaches high, so power lines and branches matter just as much, sometimes more. A crane is the right call when the site is too tight, too narrow, or too obstructed at ground level for tilt-off, but it is not a way around an overhead hydro line. The line is still the line.
