LVP flooring is luxury vinyl plank: a four-layer engineered plank built on a rigid core, with a printed wood-look film and a clear wear layer on top. In a shipping container it floats over the original plywood and resists moisture, dents, and the steel box’s seasonal movement. The core, SPC or WPC, decides how well it survives an Ontario climate.
LVP stands for luxury vinyl plank. The name is heavy on marketing and light on technical clarity, so let us name the layers honestly. A modern LVP plank is a four-layer sandwich. The bottom is a foam or cork pad, sometimes glued on at the factory, sometimes left to the installer. Above that sits the core, which is the load-bearing structural layer and the part of the plank that determines whether it can take a 4,000 kilogram pallet in a container without crushing. Above the core sits a printed photographic film that mimics oak, maple, hickory, or whatever wood species the designer chose. The top layer is a transparent wear layer made of urethane or aluminum oxide. Thickness is measured in mils, which are thousandths of an inch.
This is what makes LVP different from sheet vinyl, peel-and-stick tile, or the old softwood plywood that came glued into your container at the factory in Qingdao. Sheet vinyl is a single flexible roll. Peel-and-stick is two-layer cheap stuff that lifts the first time a forklift wheel kisses it. LVP is engineered as a rigid composite that does not flex with the steel underneath, which is the entire point when you are working inside a 20-foot Corten box that breathes with every Ontario season.
The Webflow guides that ranked above us last year called LVP “waterproof vinyl flooring” and stopped there. That description leaves out the engineering. We are going to put it back in.
The Four Layers of an LVP Plank, From Bottom to Top
- Underlayment pad (optional, factory-attached or installer-laid): 1 to 1.5 mm of IXPE foam or cork. Cuts hollow sound, smooths over minor subfloor imperfections.
- Rigid core (the structural layer): Either SPC (stone polymer composite) or WPC (wood plastic composite). SPC is denser limestone-and-PVC; WPC is foamed wood flour and thermoplastic. The core does the work.
- Printed design film (the wood-look layer): High-resolution photographic print, dimensionally stable, fused to the core under heat and pressure.
- Wear layer (the protection layer): 6 to 30 mil clear urethane with aluminum oxide particles for scratch resistance. This number is the single best predictor of how the floor will look in five years.
How Do You Read a Wear Layer Spec Sheet?
The LVP wear layer is where buyers get oversold. A residential installation typically wants 12 mil. A commercial floor in a busy retail container or food kiosk wants 20 mil. Anything under 8 mil is a homeowner-only product that we do not recommend for a working container. Shaw publishes wear layers up to 30 mil on their premium Floorté lines. Coretec runs 12 to 20 mil across most collections. Mohawk’s vinyl-plank product is the SolidTech line, which sits in the 12 to 20 mil range as well. The RevWood line that gets compared to LVP in marketing material is technically waterproof laminate, which is a different product family, and the distinction matters when you are calling vendors to compare warranties.
Match the wear layer to the use. A residential workshop or backyard studio bin gets 12 mil. A construction-site office that takes steel-toe boots and dropped tape measures all day gets 20 mil. A retail pop-up where customers walk on it in winter slush gets 20 mil and a foam-pad underlayment for the noise.
The Five-Year Test
If you can read the spec sheet wear layer number out loud and it sounds embarrassingly small, walk away. Twelve mil minimum for any container that does real work. Twenty mil if there is foot traffic, a chair on wheels, or a dolly. The plank that is cheaper today is the floor that scuffs through to the print film by year three.
SPC vs WPC: Which Core Survives a Container?
The SPC versus WPC core is the single most important specification choice for container flooring. SPC is the right answer in almost every Ontario container application. Here is the why.
Christian LeBlanc, second-generation operator: “Customers ask me which floor lasts, and the answer almost always starts with the core. I grew up walking these bins with my dad, and the SPC floors are the ones still flat when a container comes back to the yard. The wood-composite ones move with the steel. The stone-composite ones just sit there.”
SPC (stone polymer composite) is finely ground limestone bound with polyvinyl chloride resin and stabilizers. The result is a rigid, dense plank that is essentially indifferent to temperature. WPC (wood plastic composite) is a foamed core that blends wood flour with thermoplastic. The foam gives WPC a softer, warmer feel underfoot, and it absorbs sound better. WPC also expands and contracts more across a temperature swing.
An Ontario shipping container experiences interior temperatures from minus 25 degrees Celsius in a January overnight low to plus 50 degrees Celsius in a July afternoon when the steel roof has been baking. That is a 75 degree swing. A WPC plank in that environment will visibly grow and shrink across the gap at the cold-edge expansion line. An SPC plank, because its core is mostly stone, moves less than a third as much. We have seen WPC installations buckle at the seams after two summers in a south-facing storage container. We have not seen the same failure with SPC.
The trade-off is sound and warmth. SPC is harder underfoot and sounds tinnier when you walk on it. If you are converting a 20ft container into a residential studio or a backyard guest room and you want the floor to feel like a real room, you can add a cork or foam underlayment to bring back the warmth. If you are flooring a tool storage container or a construction site office, the rigidity is the feature, not the bug.

Click-Lock or Glue-Down in a 20ft Box?
LVP comes in two installation systems for a shipping container. Click-lock planks float over the subfloor, with each plank locking into the next via an angle-and-tap mechanism on the long edges and short ends. Glue-down LVP is laid flat onto a glue bed that the installer trowels onto the prepared subfloor.
For a shipping container, click-lock wins about 80 percent of the time. The reason is access. A click-lock floor can be lifted and re-laid if a plank gets damaged by a dropped piece of equipment. If a panel cracks under a forklift fork or a steel-toe stomp, you pop it out, click in a replacement, and you are done. With glue-down, you are scraping cured urethane adhesive off the plywood and laying a new plank with fresh glue that has to cure for 24 hours.
Glue-down has a place. If you are running heavy rolling traffic across the floor every day, the planks do not want to shift, and the cured-adhesive bond is more rigid than a click joint. Cold-storage container interiors (reefers) sometimes spec glue-down because the click joints can tighten or loosen as the temperature cycles. For most Ontario container conversions, click-lock is the right call. It is faster, it is forgiving, and it lets you swap individual planks instead of redoing the entire floor.
The Click-Lock Mechanism, In Plain English
A click-lock plank has a tongue cut into one long edge and a groove cut into the opposite long edge, with a similar tongue-and-groove pair on the short ends. The installer angles the new plank into the locked plank at roughly 30 degrees, pushes the long-edge tongue into the groove, then lowers the plank flat. A rubber mallet taps the short end home. The joint locks mechanically, which means it does not need glue or fasteners. The joint also lets the floor float as a single unit, so a 200 square foot 20ft container floor can expand and contract by 6 millimeters across a temperature cycle without buckling, provided the perimeter expansion gap was left correctly.
Can You Install LVP Over the Original Container Plywood?
Installing LVP over the original container plywood is usually possible, and it is the most common path. Every shipping container leaves the Chinese or Vietnamese factory with a 28-millimeter marine-grade plywood floor. That plywood is glued and fastened to the steel cross-members. After one ocean trip, it has variable moisture content, some surface scuffing, and possibly a few stains from cargo that leaked. Before you lay LVP, the plywood gets prepared. There are three honest paths.
The first path is the simplest. If the original plywood is sound, dry, and flat to within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span, you sweep it clean, lay a 1.5 millimeter IXPE foam underlayment over the entire surface, and float the click-lock LVP directly on top. This is the dominant approach for storage and light commercial use, and it works because the LVP wear layer protects against everything that used to scratch the bare plywood.
The second path adds a layer of 6 millimeter plywood (or 1/4 inch hardboard) screwed down into the original floor at 8 inch intervals. This creates a perfectly flat new subfloor that levels any waves or sags in the original 28mm sheet. It is the right call for premium residential conversions, retail pop-ups where the surface has to be camera-ready, and reefer containers where any unevenness will reveal itself the moment a cooler unit is rolled across the floor.
The third path is glue-down LVP directly onto the original plywood after sanding it flat. This is the most labour-intensive option and is only used when the customer wants a rigidly bonded floor for very high traffic. We rarely recommend it for a single-use container.
Subfloor Prep Checklist Before LVP Goes Down
- Moisture: Plywood reading under 14 percent on a pin-type meter. If higher, ventilate and dehumidify the container for 48 hours.
- Flatness: 3/16 inch maximum variation across 10 feet. Use a long aluminum straight-edge to check; sand high spots, fill low spots with self-leveller.
- Cleanliness: Sweep, vacuum, then wipe with a damp cloth and let dry. Adhesive residue from prior cargo gets scraped off with a 4-inch floor scraper.
- Fastener heads: Set any nail or screw heads flush. A proud fastener telegraphs through LVP within two months.
- Acclimation: Let LVP cartons sit unopened in the container for 48 hours before installation, so the planks reach equilibrium with the steel-box climate.
Why Does Container Flex and Corten Thermal Movement Matter?
Container flex matters because a 20-foot Corten weathering steel container that sits in the open in Ontario is constantly moving. The steel walls expand in summer heat by roughly 0.012 millimeters per metre per degree Celsius. Across a 50 degree summer-to-winter swing, a 20ft container changes length by about 4 millimeters and width by about 1.5 millimeters. The corner posts flex. The floor breathes with the rest of the box.
This is why a floating LVP floor with proper expansion gaps is the right system for a container. A glued-down rigid system fights the steel, and the fight shows up as cracked joints or popped seams within a year. A floated SPC system goes with the steel and absorbs the movement at the perimeter expansion gap.
The perimeter gap is critical. Manufacturers spec a 6 to 10 millimeter gap between the LVP edge and any fixed obstruction (the steel side walls, door frames, columns where modifications have been added). Skip the gap, and the floor pushes against the wall on a hot day and tents in the middle. Cover the gap with quarter-round trim or shoe moulding once the floor is installed. The trim hides the gap and protects the foam underlayment edge.
Why This Matters in Ontario Specifically
Ontario container interiors hit a wider seasonal swing than most jurisdictions where LVP marketing was written. A south-facing 40ft container parked on a Brantford property runs 50°C on its roof in July and minus 25°C in January. That is a 75 degree real temperature delta against the slightly larger air-temperature delta. The Corten skin expands more than the LVP, which is exactly why click-lock with proper expansion gaps survives where glue-down often does not. A 40ft high cube is the same floor area but the extra foot of headroom does not change the floor cost. If you are starting from a fresh box rather than retrofitting a used one, a factory-paint container straight off its single voyage gives the cleanest plywood to lay over.
Compare that to engineered hardwood (which installs at a noticeably higher per-square-foot rate) or ceramic tile (which we do not recommend for containers because the steel flex cracks the grout). LVP is the best ratio of durability to price for almost every container conversion in Ontario.

Shaw Floorté is now sold simply as “Shaw luxury vinyl” after the Floorté brand was retired in early 2026, but the product family is the same. Mohawk’s vinyl plank line is SolidTech, not RevWood. Maintaining LVP in a working container is the lowest-effort job of any container floor option on the market. The wear layer is sealed against moisture, so there is no annual refinish like hardwood, no grout cleaning like tile, no swelling like raw plywood. Sweep regularly. Damp-mop with a pH-neutral floor cleaner. Avoid steam mops, which can drive moisture into the click joints over time and lift the planks. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners on the urethane wear layer.
For a workshop container, place a heavy-duty rubber mat under any rolling tool chest. For a jobsite office, walk-off mats at the door catch grit before it scratches the wear layer. For a retail or pop-up application, a polish that matches the wear layer chemistry can extend the floor’s commercial life by a year or two between full replacement cycles.
Most LVP carries a residential warranty of 15 to 25 years and a commercial warranty of 5 to 10 years. The warranties cover wear-through, not impact damage. Drop a hammer head-first and you will dent the plank. The benefit of click-lock is that you replace the dented plank in 15 minutes and the rest of the floor stays put.
