Skip a pass and you miss a category of fault.

Pass one is the unit-off cold inspection. Steel exterior, hinge gear, door seals, panel skins, T-bar floor, condensate drains, evaporator coil visible through the return-air grille. The compressor sits silent, the lights stay off, you read the unit as a static object. This is where dents, repair welds on the front wall around the unit, and panel delamination show up. Closed eyes work better than open ones for some of this: run a palm along the inside wall and feel for cold spots where insulation has settled.

Pass two is the controller-on dry run. Plug in to 3-phase shore power. The display boots. The controller cycles through self-test. Sensors light up: supply air, return air, defrost, ambient, evaporator coil, condenser coil. Compressor stays off for the first three to four minutes while pressures balance. Then it engages and you listen.

Refrigerant pressures, sensor drift, and bearing wear can shift in ten weeks. A current PTI is the actual purchase decision document. How Good Is Reefer Insulation and What R-Value Does It Give?

The shell is what makes a reefer a reefer. A failed compressor can be replaced. A failed insulation core cannot, not economically. The shell is the bet you make for the next 15 years.

Standard reefer shells use a sandwich panel construction: two thin metal skins (often stainless steel inner, painted steel outer, sometimes a fiberglass inner on older builds) with a foamed-in-place polyurethane core. Core thickness runs 60 to 100 millimetres. Polyurethane gives an R-value of roughly 6 to 7 per inch of thickness, so a 75 mm wall (about 3 inches) lands near R-18 to R-21 across the wall section. Roof panels are typically thicker and reach R-25 or higher. Door areas are the weak point because the seal interrupts the continuous foam.

Newer premium units use Vacuum Insulated Panels (VIPs) layered with polyurethane. Run a hand along the interior wall after the unit has been running on chill for an hour. The wall should be uniformly cool. A warm spot is a void where insulation has settled or delaminated from the skin. On a hot day you can sometimes see condensation pattern differences from the outside: a panel section that sweats more than its neighbours is a section losing more heat. Bring a non-contact infrared thermometer and check for surface temperature variance greater than 4 degrees Celsius across adjacent panels. That variance is your evidence.

Old refrigerant in a reefer is its own concern. Pre-1995 units sometimes still operate on R-22, which is being phased down under the Montreal Protocol amendments. R-134a units are still serviceable but require licensed refrigerant handling. Newer NaturaLINE Carrier units use R-744 (CO2) as a natural refrigerant. Confirm what your unit runs on before you commit. An R-22 unit with a slow leak is an expensive ongoing maintenance commitment because the refrigerant itself keeps getting harder to source.

How Do You Check the T-Bar Floor and Condensate Drains?

The cargo space inside a reefer has a different floor system than a dry box. Instead of plywood, you get extruded aluminum T-bar profiles that run lengthwise. The shape of the T raises cargo off the floor and creates channels that let chilled air pass underneath the load. Without that floor design, the cargo at the bottom of a pallet stack would warm up before the cargo at the top.

  • Bent or crushed sections. Forklift damage shows here first. A flattened T-bar reduces airflow and creates hot pockets above it. Replacement aluminum extrusion is available, but the installation labour rises with each linear foot of profile that has to be swapped, so a floor with widespread crush damage is a real negotiating point.
  • Corrosion at the rear-door drain channels. Salt water from coastal routes, citric acid from rotten produce, and bleach from misguided cleaning all eat T-bar over time. Look for white powder on the aluminum surface.
  • Loose or missing T-bar fasteners. The profiles should be tight to the cross-beam structure. A T-bar that lifts when you stand on it is structurally compromised.
  • Drain channel function. Pour a litre of water at the back of the cargo space. It should drain forward and exit through the drain at the front of the floor near the evaporator. Standing water after 60 seconds means the drains are blocked.

Condensate drains are the smallest part of the reefer and one of the most overlooked. The evaporator coil produces condensation as it cools warm air. That water has to leave the box. Most reefers have two to four small drain ports near the front interior corners that route water through the front wall and out the underside. If those drains are blocked with dried product residue (fish bones, sticky fruit pulp, biofilm from a meat run) the water backs up and either freezes the evaporator over or rots the floor channel.

Run a thin wire down each drain. It should come out the bottom side of the unit cleanly. If you hit resistance, the drain is blocked and the unit needs a flush before purchase. This is a 30-minute job at the yard but it is a job that someone has to do.

The smell test. Walk in. Close the door behind you. Breathe. A clean reefer smells like cold metal and a faint mineral note from the aluminum. A reefer with biofilm smells faintly sweet, fishy, or sharply chemical depending on its last cargo. That smell does not always wash out. Can You Run a Reefer on Residential Power?

You cannot run a standard container reefer on ordinary residential power, and that is the single most common surprise for Ontario buyers. Container reefers run on 3-phase 460V power as standard. That is industrial power. Your residential 200-amp service does not have 3-phase available without a utility upgrade plus a transformer.

Three power options for a 3-phase reefer on a non-3-phase site

One: install a phase converter (a rotary phase converter costs more than a static converter but is far more reliable on the motor loads a compressor presents). Two: install a dedicated 3-phase service drop with the local utility (Hydro One or your municipal utility), where the cost is driven mostly by how far your site sits from the nearest 3-phase line. Three: convert the unit to a single-phase variant using a service that swaps the motor and controller, where the price depends on the unit generation and parts. The power cord itself is replaceable but worth a look. The 460V cord with the 3-phase plug on the end is 25 to 50 feet long depending on build. The plug should be a 32-amp 5-pin twist-lock IEC pin-and-sleeve type in most cases. Inspect for: nicks in the jacket exposing wire, loose strain relief at the cord entry into the unit, pin discoloration or arc burn at the plug face.

The other power consideration is whether the unit supports gen-set operation. Some reefers ship with a hookup for a clip-on diesel generator (gen-set) used during over-the-road transport when shore power is not available. If you are buying for static yard installation you do not need that hookup, but if your site has rolling power outages a gen-set ready unit gives you fallback capacity.

Does the Controller Generation Matter When Buying a Reefer?

The controller is the brain. It is also the part that ages out fastest in software terms. A Carrier Transicold from 2002 still runs but its software predates modern data logging requirements. A 2018 Thermo King MP-4000 logs every minute of every cycle and exports through USB. The difference matters if your cargo needs traceability (pharma, certified organic, premium produce buyers asking for chain-of-custody temp logs).
