Most of the delivery problems we see at Van Blanc are not about the container. They are about the 100-odd feet of ground the truck needs to set it down. A 40ft shipping container does not get craned over the house and lowered onto a spot like a helicopter dropping cargo. On a normal delivery it slides off the back of a tilt-deck trailer at ground level, and that slide needs room. Get the room right and the bin lands clean in twenty minutes. Get it wrong and the truck cannot finish the job.

This is the clearance-math page. We will give you the straight-line length for a 20ft versus a 40ft, the width, the overhead, the turning room, and how close the truck actually has to get. Then there is a measure-your-site checklist you can print and walk your lot with before you ever call. How much straight pull-out space does a 40ft container need?

A tilt-deck delivery works by gravity. The driver backs the trailer into position, tilts the bed up at an angle, and the container slides off the high end while the truck eases forward out from under it. That forward pull is the key: the truck needs the length of the container plus the length of the trailer and cab, in a straight line, to clear out from beneath the box as it settles.

So the straight pull-out is always longer than the container itself. As a working rule from our deliveries:

Picture that straight line running through the exact spot where you want the container to end up, continuing well past it in the direction the truck will drive forward. The container ends up at the start of that line; the truck finishes at the far end. If a fence, a building, or a row of mature trees cuts the line short, the driver cannot complete the slide on that approach. That is the single most common reason a delivery has to be re-planned.

Why “pull-out” is the number that matters

Buyers often measure the footprint of the container (a 40ft sits on roughly a 40 ft by 8 ft pad, about 320 sq ft) and assume that is the space they need. It is not. The footprint is where the box sleeps. The pull-out is the runway the truck needs to put it there. A 40ft container has external dimensions of 12.19 m long by 2.44 m wide (ISO 6346), but the delivery envelope is three to four times that length. Always plan around the runway, not the footprint.

How wide and how tall does the clearance have to be?

A loaded delivery truck needs roughly 12 feet of width along the whole approach, not just at the drop spot. That covers the tractor, the trailer, and the wing of the bed as it tilts. Narrow gateposts, a parked car halfway down the lane, or a tight pinch between a house and a hedge can stop a truck that would otherwise have had plenty of length.

Overhead is the clearance people forget. When the bed tilts up to let the container slide, the high end of the trailer rises well above the parked height of the truck. Plan for at least 14 feet of overhead clearance for a standard container and 16 feet for a high cube, and keep that envelope clear of power lines, phone and cable drops, low branches, eaves, carport roofs, and basketball nets along the entire pull-out, not only over the final spot. A hydro line crossing the driveway is a hard stop, and one nobody notices until the bed is already going up.

The clearance most people miss

Walk the full length of the approach looking straight up, not just down. The container slides at ground level so the ground is obvious, but the tilt reaches high. Overhead wires and branches over the driveway, not over the spot, are what catch people out. If you are not sure a line is high enough, snap a photo from underneath and send it with your quote. We would rather sort it on the phone than turn a truck around in your cul-de-sac.

How close does the truck need to get to the spot?

On a tilt-deck drop the answer is blunt: the truck has to get right up to the placement spot. The container leaves the back of the trailer and lands at ground level immediately behind it, so the rear of the trailer essentially needs to be at the near end of where the box will sit, lined up with that straight pull-out running forward. There is no meaningful “reach” on a tilt-deck. The bin lands where the trailer can physically back to.

That is why a spot tucked behind a garage, on the far side of a soft lawn, or up a slope the truck cannot climb is a problem even when the spot itself is perfect. The container can only go where the truck can position the trailer and pull clear. When access allows the truck to reach the spot, a tilt-deck is the simplest, cleanest delivery there is, and no crane is needed at all because the container is never lifted, just lowered.

When tilt-deck cannot reach: the HIAB crane option

For sites where the truck genuinely cannot back to the spot (a container that has to clear a fence, drop into a tight courtyard, or land where a trailer cannot line up), the answer is a HIAB, the truck-mounted knuckle-boom crane. A HIAB lifts the container off its own deck and swings it into place. Typical reach is around 6 to 7 metres from the truck on common units, enough to set a 20ft over a six-foot fence or into a spot the trailer can never touch. The trade-off is that the crane truck needs firm footing for its outriggers and the lift adds cost and planning. How much room to turn the truck on a tight lot?

A container truck is a long, heavy combination, and the trickiest part of most deliveries is not the straight run, it is the turn into it. A tight ninety-degree turn from a residential street into a driveway is where deliveries most often stall. As a rough guide the truck wants a turning radius in the order of 20 to 30 feet of clear swing to line up cleanly, and the sharper the entry angle, the more straight length it then needs on the far side to recover and aim down the pull-out.

If your lot is tight, the question to ask is not just “will the container fit” but “can the truck swing in, straighten out, and still have its full pull-out length once it has turned.” A long shared laneway with a hard corner at the end can defeat a delivery that looks roomy on paper. This is exactly the kind of thing worth a two-minute phone call before the truck is dispatched.

How far can the truck reach into your property?

People often ask how far the truck can reach into a property, hoping the driver can set the container deep in the back forty while the truck stays on the road. On a tilt-deck the honest answer is that the truck does not reach in at all. It places the container where it can safely back the trailer and pull forward, so the container ends up along the line the truck can physically travel and clear. The driver will get it as far and as precisely as the access allows, and a good one will thread it surprisingly tight, but the box cannot land somewhere the trailer cannot line up to.

That is the realistic expectation to plan around: the container goes where the truck can safely reach and pull clear, not wherever you can point. If the ideal spot is past where the truck can go, you have two options. Have the container set as close as the truck can manage and move it the rest of the way with equipment on site, or book a HIAB lift to swing it in. Either way, we work it out with you before delivery day so there are no surprises in the driveway.

Why firm, dry ground decides everything

A loaded delivery truck is heavy. The tractor, trailer, and a container together run well into the tens of thousands of pounds, and a fully loaded combination can exceed 45,000 to 50,000 lbs. All of that rides on a handful of tires, and once the container is on the ground its weight concentrates on four corner castings. Put that on soft ground and the corners sink, the box tilts, and the truck itself can bog down trying to get to the spot or back out.

Firm, dry, and level is the trifecta. Gravel and compacted soil are ideal. Fresh asphalt on a hot day, saturated lawn after rain, soft fill, or spring thaw are where trouble starts. The truck cannot safely drive over ground it might punch through, and a container on a soft pad will keep settling for months. Level matters too: the doors on a shipping container are tuned to swing and seal when the box sits square, so a container set on a tilt can be hard to open and may not seal against weather. It is worth settling which way the doors should open before the truck arrives, because the box lands facing the direction you plan for.

What good ground looks like for delivery day

  • Firm: gravel, compacted granular, or solid native soil that a loaded truck will not sink into.
  • Dry: not saturated, not muddy. After heavy Ontario rain or during spring thaw, give it a day or push the date.
  • Level: a roughly level pad so the box sits square and the doors seal. Minor grade is fine; a noticeable slope is not.
  • Clear corners: if the ground is borderline, a few patio slabs, railway ties, or a gravel pad under the four corner castings spreads the load.

Ontario ground, Ontario seasons

Across Brant County and the rest of southern Ontario the two ground problems we plan around most are spring thaw and clay. A laneway that holds a truck fine in August can be axle-deep in April. Heavy clay soils hold water and stay soft longer after rain than sandy ground does. None of this stops a delivery, it just means timing the date and prepping the corners. Measure your site: the printable checklist

Walk your lot once with a tape measure and these numbers, and you will know before you call whether a standard tilt-deck delivery will work or whether you want to talk through a HIAB lift. Stand where you want the container to sit, then look down the line the truck would drive.
