A COP of 5 means you get 5 units of heat energy for every 1 unit of electricity you put in. In warm weather, with ambient air above 20°C, a modern Canadian-spec pool heat pump runs at COP 4 to 5. The curve bends as the air cools. Between 10°C and 20°C ambient, COP drops to about 3. Between 5°C and 10°C, you are at COP 2 to 3. When Does a Container Pool Need a Natural Gas Heater?

A natural gas heater earns its place on a container pool when you need speed or cold-weather capability, because gas solves the two problems a heat pump cannot. They heat fast, and they do not care how cold it is outside. The trade-off is the running cost, which is structurally higher than a heat pump because gas combustion is a one-shot energy transfer at roughly 80 percent efficiency, where the heat pump moves existing ambient heat at 200 to 500 percent effective efficiency.

If you have natural gas service to your property, a gas heater for a container pool typically runs 200,000 to 400,000 BTU. That extra capacity is what gives you the rapid heat-up. A 250K BTU gas heater can take an 8°C pool to 27°C swim temperature in 3 to 6 hours, where a heat pump might need 24 to 48. Bigger units run faster. The fastest residential gas heaters will warm a 40ft container pool in under three hours from a moderate starting temp.

Equipment cost for the unit itself is broadly similar to a heat pump, but you also have to budget the gas line install if you do not already have a stub at the deck. The gas line install is often the unbudgeted cost. If your gas meter is on the far side of the house from the pool location, the trenching and line run can add up quickly depending on the distance and what the line has to cross.

Operating cost is where the gas heater story changes character depending on what you are using it for. Used as a season-extension tool, running the heater hard for a few hours twice a week to lift the pool back to swim temp on a cool morning, gas costs stay modest because you only burn fuel on the days you actually fire it. The fundamental limit is sunlight. On a cloudy week, solar contributes almost nothing. Past mid-September in southern Ontario, the sun angle drops and total daily energy capture falls off a cliff. By October the system is not worth running.

Spring through fall (April 15 to October 31) is the realistic Ontario container pool season with a heat pump and a cover. October swimming is comfortable through about Thanksgiving weekend with the right setup. Five and a half months of usable water. That is what most container pool owners in our region get.

Shoulder season extension (early April or November) is doable with a gas heater added to the heat pump. The gas does the morning recovery on cold nights; the heat pump holds temperature during the day; the cover stays on whenever nobody is swimming. Operating cost climbs noticeably above the mid-season heat-pump baseline for those edge months. That is a real choice some owners make, especially when the pool is used by a family that wants to swim Easter weekend or close to American Thanksgiving.

True winter swimming (December to February) is technically possible but the cost equation is different from what people expect. To hold a container pool at 28°C in Ontario January, with -10°C to -20°C ambient air and snow loading on the cover, you need:

Who actually uses a container pool year-round in Ontario

Done wrong, you spend in spring repairing burst plumbing, cracked filter housings, or a heat exchanger that ruptured because somebody missed draining the heater.

Closing a container pool, step by step

  • Timing: Close when overnight lows consistently drop below 10°C, typically late September to mid-October in southern Ontario. Close earlier in Sudbury, Bracebridge, or any cottage country location.
  • Water chemistry: Shock and chlorinate, balance pH to 7.2 to 7.6, and add a winterizing algaecide. The water sits all winter; you want it stable.
  • Lower water level: Drop water 4 to 6 inches below the lowest return jet so freezing water cannot push back into the plumbing. Do not drain the pool fully; you want hydrostatic pressure on the liner and shell.
  • Drain equipment: Pump, filter, heater, and all plumbing lines must be completely drained. Use a shop vac or air compressor to blow out residual water from underground or near-frostline lines. This is the step most owners get wrong.
  • Antifreeze in plumbing: After blowing lines, add non-toxic pool antifreeze to plumbing as a backup against any moisture you missed. Standard pool antifreeze, not automotive.
