Why can’t you lift a loaded container by the fork pockets?

The single most repeated piece of bad advice on the container forums in Canada is some version of “your local 20-ton forklift can pick up a full 20 ft sea can from the fork pockets if you go slow.” Two things are wrong with that. The industry rule of thumb is that fork pockets are safe for empty containers up to roughly 3 tonnes (about 6,600 lb) for a 10 ft unit, with 20 ft and 40 ft pockets tested for empty tare plus a small allowance. Tare on a 20 ft standard is about 2,300 kg; on a 40 ft it climbs to 3,800 kg or so. The pockets handle the tare comfortably. They do not handle the tare plus 25 tonnes of cargo. If a container needs to move with cargo inside, the right tool is corner-casting lifting, not pocket lifting. The load-centre trap catches more contractors than any other detail. A standard warehouse forklift is rated at a 24-inch load centre, meaning a 5-tonne forklift can lift 5 tonnes with the load centre 24 inches in front of the carriage. A shipping container, picked from the side, has a load centre of about 1.2 metres (47 inches) from the carriage. That doubles the effective moment. What ground conditions does a container forklift need to work safely?
Firm, level ground rated for industrial loads. Compacted gravel, asphalt, or concrete all work. A loaded 20 ft container at 30 tonnes plus a 5-tonne forklift puts about 2.5 tonnes per square metre on whatever foundation the container is sitting on. Soft lawn, fresh fill, or residential driveways rated for passenger cars sink under that load within a single loading session.
How does Van Blanc handle forklift loading at the Brantford yard for customer pickups?
For customer pickups at our 90 Morton Avenue yard, our yard team performs the lift onto the customer’s trailer using our container handler. We do not require the customer to bring their own machine. For deliveries, we handle the placement through tilt-deck or HIAB depending on site access.
