Oilfield camps used to mean ATCO-style hard-sided trailers towed on skids or pulled by lowboy. Camp builders building for oilfield clients are working to CSA Z240 MH (manufactured housing for permanent and full-time placement) or CSA A277 (factory-built buildings for commercial occupancy). They are not working to Z241, which is the seasonal park-model RV standard. The distinction matters because the oilfield client’s procurement team writes Z240 or A277 into the spec sheet, and the camp builder has to be able to certify the build to that standard.

What this means for the shell we ship: the container itself does not carry a CSA label. The CSA labelling happens at the camp-builder’s conversion shop after the unit has been gutted, insulated, fitted with structural openings, wired, plumbed, and finished. What that table tells the procurement team at a Cenovus or CNRL contractor: the way to control camp cost is to control conversion efficiency and freight, not to grind the shell supplier. The shell is too small a slice of the total to matter. The same procurement team will sometimes ask us about volume pricing on shells, and we will give them the honest answer: a 5% discount on a 7% line item moves the project budget by 0.35%. Which Shell Grade Suits Each Camp Module?

Container grades matter on an oilfield-camp build, but not in the way most buyers expect. The intuitive assumption is that oilfield work means hard service, so the camp builder should buy one-trip premium stock for everything. The actual practice is more mixed.

Lower-stack sleeper units that carry the load of a second-storey unit above them: those want one-trip or near-one-trip shells with documented floor and frame condition. The structural twist-locks have to engage cleanly, and the corner-post integrity has to be uncompromised. We supply fresh one-trip 40ft HC stock straight off its single ocean voyage for these slots, with the pre-shipment photograph file going to the camp builder’s QA team.

Upper-stack units carrying no load above them, plus ablutions, dry kitchen, dry storage, office and laundry: those can run on cargo-worthy (CW) shells, and it is worth understanding how cargo-worthy and wind-and-watertight grades actually differ before a builder commits a unit to a module. The cosmetic wear gets stripped off in the conversion shop anyway, because every external panel gets sandblasted, primed and repainted in the camp builder’s brand colours. The structural baseline matters; the surface rust does not.

Wind-and-watertight (WWT) shells get used occasionally for dry-storage modules, lay-down containers around the pad perimeter, and non-occupancy ancillary functions. They do not work for sleeper or wet-service modules because the conversion shop cannot warranty the build to Z240 on a shell that does not pass the structural baseline.

One-trip: lower-stack sleepers, dining-hall bridging units, wet-kitchen module (because of the equipment load and the steam load), upper-management single-occupancy quarters. How Do Oilfield Camps Differ From Mining Camps?

Mining and oilfield camps share a lot of architecture but diverge on three fronts: scale, fire egress, and freight access. A working mine in northern Ontario or Quebec runs camps of 200 to 800 beds because the workforce on site is permanent. An oilfield camp running a drilling program is 30 to 100 beds because the workforce is shift-based and rotational. The mining-camp module pattern is one giant integrated complex with corridors. The oilfield-camp pattern is a constellation of separate modules connected by walkways or short skywalk bridges.

Fire egress is the other big divergence. Mining-camp corridors get treated as occupied space and have to clear National Building Code corridor-egress requirements. Oilfield-camp modules are individually occupied and connect via outdoor walkways, which means each module is its own egress zone with its own exterior doors. Two exterior doors on opposite ends of every sleeper, framed and weather-sealed, is the baseline.

Freight access is the third one. A mining camp 200 kilometres up a logging road faces a narrower freight window than an oilfield camp on a gravel access road off a graded provincial highway. The oilfield-camp container can usually arrive on a standard step-deck. The mining-camp container often has to transfer to a B-train, sometimes to a tracked carrier for the last few kilometres. We have not seen a tracked-carrier last mile on an oilfield delivery in two decades. The roads, even the rough ones, take a flatbed.

The other place oilfield and mining diverge: regulatory regime. Oilfield camps in Alberta operate under the Alberta Energy Regulator’s Directive 79 (camp standards) and the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code. Mining camps operate under Ontario Regulation 854 (mines and mining plants) or the provincial equivalent in Quebec, BC, etc. The camp builder is responsible for those overlays; the shell supplier (us) is not. But knowing which regime applies tells you why oilfield procurement specs read differently from mining procurement specs even when the physical camp looks similar.

How Does an Oilfield Camp Get Power, Water, and Sewer?

An oilfield camp is its own utility. Grid power does not reach most of these locations. A 50-bed camp typically runs on two parallel diesel gensets in the 250 kW to 400 kW range, depending on the equipment load. One genset runs at any given time; the second is hot-standby for failover and load balancing during peak meal-service hours when the wet kitchen pulls heavy. The genset enclosure is a 20ft container fitted with insulation, sound attenuation, fuel-tank ventilation, exhaust routing and remote monitoring.

Water comes in by tanker truck, stored in heated above-ground bladders typically 10,000 to 20,000 gallons depending on camp size, and gets pumped into the camp’s internal plumbing. Greywater and sewage go to lined holding tanks that get pumped out on a weekly or bi-weekly cadence by septic contractors. The sewage truck routing is one of the operational realities of oilfield camp logistics: someone has to drive the pump-out truck on a regular schedule, in winter, on gravel.

Heating in the sleepers and common areas runs off the genset power, with electric baseboards or in-floor radiant. Some camps have a small propane feed for the wet kitchen range and fryer, supplied by tanker as needed. The fuel logistics (diesel for gensets, propane for kitchen, water in, sewage out) is its own line item on the camp operating budget, and it never stops. Maintenance and operations crews on SAGD pads run more conventional 14-on, 14-off or 10-on, 4-off rotations.

The camp is sized to shift, not headcount, as discussed earlier. The other planning dimension is gender split and management quarters. Modern Canadian oilfield camps build separate ablution blocks for female crew members and reserve a small percentage (typically 5-10% of total bed count) as single-occupancy management quarters. That changes the module mix on the camp build. A 50-bed camp with a 90/10 line-worker to management split needs 23 double-occupancy sleeper modules (46 line workers) plus 4 single-occupancy management modules (4 managers). That is 27 sleeper containers instead of 25, plus the gender-split ablution overhead.

Procurement teams sometimes ask camp builders to spec the rotation in advance to lock the module count. Others build flexibility into the camp so the same physical infrastructure can serve a 14/14 contract one year and a 21/7 contract the next.
