A container bathroom is plumbed differently from a normal bathroom because the shell is steel, not framed wood. In a 20ft or 40ft container the walls are corrugated Corten steel, the floor is marine plywood over steel cross-members, and the roof is a single corrugated sheet. There is no stud bay to hide a drain stack and no attic to slope a vent through. Every pipe penetration is a hole through steel that needs to seal, drain, and survive thermal cycling between January at minus 25 and August at plus 35.

The Three Container-Specific Plumbing Constraints

First, the floor is only about 6 inches above grade when the bin sits on blocks. That sets your drain slope budget. Second, the walls are non-structural for plumbing chases, so most builders frame interior 2×4 walls inside the steel to hide pipes. Third, the roof penetration for the vent stack needs a metal-roof boot rated for the corrugation profile, not a generic asphalt-shingle boot from the hardware store.

Why Should You Plan the Layout Before the Plumbing?

The bathroom layout should be planned first because it decides where every pipe runs, and in a container there is no room to improvise. Before any pipe gets cut, the bathroom layout has to be drawn full-scale on the container floor. That is not a romantic exercise. It is the cheapest hour of the whole build. Tape out the toilet, the sink, the shower pan, and the door swing. Walk through it. Sit on the spot where the toilet will go and see if your knees clear the wall opposite. Stand at the sink and see if the medicine cabinet would hit the bulkhead. Step into the shower zone and reach for where the controls would be.

The wet wall is the single most important decision. That is the wall holding your drain stack, hot and cold supply, and (in some layouts) the vent take-off. Putting it on the long wall of a 20ft container against the existing container door end gives you the shortest plumbing run to the exterior, which keeps the under-floor drain slope easier to achieve. Putting it on the long sidewall stretches the run but lets you arrange the rest of the floor plan more flexibly.

Tip: Wet Wall on the Container Door End

Most of the 40ft tiny homes we see leaving the yard put the bathroom against the original container doors. That end already has a structural cross-member to attach to, the doors stay functional for service access to the plumbing chase, and the drain can exit straight down through the floor in the corner crash zone where you would not be standing anyway. Save the long sidewalls for windows and living space.

Is PEX or Copper Better for a Container Bathroom?

PEX is the better water-supply choice for almost every container bathroom in Ontario. Cross-linked polyethylene is flexible, freeze-tolerant, fast to install, and forgiving of the slightly-out-of-plumb realities of a retrofit build. Copper has its place in commercial work, but in a container tiny home the case for copper is thin.

The freeze argument is the one that matters most for Ontario. Copper conducts cold straight to the water column and ruptures when ice forms. PEX expands with the ice, then relaxes back to original diameter when things thaw. That does not mean PEX is freeze-proof. Foam pipe sleeve and a smart routing plan still matter. But the recovery margin on PEX is meaningfully better than rigid copper at the kind of temperatures cottage country and the back forty actually see.

Standard sizing for a small bathroom: 3/4-inch PEX trunk lines from the manifold to within a few feet of the fixtures, then 1/2-inch branches to each fixture. Use a home-run manifold rather than tee fittings if you have the wall space, because every fixture gets its own shut-off and a leak in one branch does not drain the whole system. Run PEX inside the interior framed wall, never inside the corrugated steel cavity, where condensation lives.

PEX-A vs PEX-B in a Container

PEX-A is more flexible and recovers from kinks with a heat gun. PEX-B is stiffer, cheaper, and uses crimp rings. For a one-time tiny home build where you want long sweeping runs through tight corners, PEX-A pays for itself. For a buy-and-sell flip where cost is the priority, PEX-B is fine. Either one is dramatically better in a steel box than copper.

How Does the Drain Stack and Roof Vent Work in a Container?

The drain stack and vent are the part of a container bathroom that most plans get wrong, because drains need slope and a container has almost no height to spare. The drain side is where most container bathroom plans fall apart. Water supply can flex. Drains have to slope. Slope means height. Height is the one thing a container does not have.

A 3-inch ABS or PVC main drain stack carries the toilet waste and the combined grey water from sink and shower. Standard slope is 1/4 inch per foot. A 12-foot run from the toilet to the exterior wall therefore needs 3 inches of fall. The container floor sits about 6 inches above the steel cross-members when you build over them, so the math works, but it works tightly. Plan the route on graph paper before you cut the first hole.

The vent is the part most container bathroom plans skimp on. For a small bathroom on a single fixture group, wet venting through the lavatory drain to a 2-inch vent stack that runs up to a roof penetration is the standard solution your plumber will recognise.

Brantford and Ontario Roof Penetrations

The vent stack exits through the corrugated steel roof. Use a Dektite or equivalent EPDM roof flashing rated for metal-roof corrugation, sealed with butyl tape and stainless screws, and finish the exterior with a high-tensile sealant rated for the Ontario freeze-thaw cycle. A generic shingle boot will fail by the second winter. Tip: Decide the Toilet Before the Floor Plan

The toilet choice dictates whether you need a vented drain stack at all. A composting setup needs a small fan vent, not a 3-inch plumbing stack. A macerator needs a small-diameter discharge line, not a sloped 3-inch line. A conventional toilet needs the full vented drain assembly. Picking the toilet last is the single most expensive mistake we see. Decide it first.

How Do You Fit Hot Water Into 8 Feet of Width?

Hot water in a container bathroom is a space problem before it is a heat problem, because a container is only 8 feet wide and every square foot counts. A standard 40-gallon tank takes up an interior closet’s worth of floor and stays full of hot water you mostly are not using. A tankless on-demand unit hangs on a wall, fires only when a tap opens, and frees up the floor space the tank would have eaten.

For a container tiny home with one bathroom and a small kitchen, a propane tankless unit sized at 5 to 7 gallons per minute is the sweet spot. Mount it on the interior wall opposite the bathroom for the shortest hot-water run. Vent the combustion gases through a stainless concentric flue out a sidewall, not the roof, so the roof is reserved for the plumbing vent stack and any solar penetrations.

Electric tankless is an option in a grid-connected build with 200-amp service, but the simultaneous load of a shower and a tap can trip a smaller panel. For the typical 100-amp service most ADU containers run on, propane tankless is the practical answer.

Hot-Water Recirculation in a Tiny Footprint

In a 40ft container the longest hot-water run from heater to fixture is maybe 30 feet. That is short enough that a recirculation loop is overkill. A demand-button recirc pump at the farthest fixture is the most you would ever need, and most owners skip even that. Tankless plus a short run equals hot water at the tap in under 10 seconds.

How Do You Freeze-Protect Container Plumbing for an Ontario Winter?

Freeze protection for a container bathroom means keeping every pipe inside the heated envelope and planning for the steel shell that conducts cold straight through. Ontario freezes every year. A container tiny home plumbed for three-season use is a different animal from one plumbed for year-round occupancy, and the cost difference is real. If you intend to use the bathroom in January, plan for it now.

The basics: insulate the floor underside with closed-cell spray foam between the steel cross-members. Run all plumbing through the heated interior envelope, never through unconditioned cavity. Sleeve every PEX run with foam pipe insulation. Use heat trace cable on the supply line entering the container from the cistern or well, with a thermostat that activates below 4 degrees Celsius. Slope all exterior drain runs so they cannot hold standing water, because a frozen P-trap will split.

The drain side is where freezing gets sneaky. The vent stack rising through the roof is full of cold air. Where it transitions into the heated bathroom, condensation can collect and freeze, restricting venting. Wrap the upper portion of the vent stack with R-6 minimum insulation and seal the roof-flashing penetration tightly. Experienced cold-climate plumbers know this failure mode and design around it from the start.

Cottage Country and the Three-Season Compromise

Many Muskoka and Haliburton container tiny homes are deliberately built three-season, with a winterization drain-down protocol every fall. Blow out the supply lines with compressed air. Pour RV antifreeze in every P-trap. Drain the hot-water tank if you have one. Close the main valve. That practice extends the useful life of the plumbing by avoiding the brutal cycle of partial freezes, and it is the honest path for buyers who only use the cabin from May to October. Photograph every pipe before you close the walls and keep a simple plumbing map showing each fixture location. The owner who buys the unit from you in fifteen years, or your own future self chasing a leak, will thank you. The rough-in is the one stage you cannot easily revisit once the interior wall is finished, so it is worth slowing down for.

The reefer-container path is a different animal.
