The November Backlog Every Studio Knows
A taxidermy studio runs on a brutal seasonal curve. Deer season arrives and capes come through the door faster than anyone can flesh them, each one a client’s once-in-a-lifetime animal and each one perishable. The freezer fills in a fortnight, the same squeeze the deer-season cooler hits on the processing side of the same weeks. Then the overflow starts living in a chest freezer in the garage, a second-hand upright in the basement, and whatever a friend has room for, and the studio’s most valuable inventory is scattered across three buildings with no single inventory list.
Meanwhile the other half of the operation is chemical. Tanning solutions, bacteriostats, solvents, paints, and adhesives accumulate, and a good many of them are flammable. Those two storage problems pull in opposite directions: one wants sealed cold with a compressor running, the other wants active ventilation and distance from every ignition source. Trying to solve both in one room is the mistake, and it is the reason this page recommends two boxes instead of one.
Hair Slip Is a Temperature Problem
The failure that ruins a mount has a name every taxidermist dreads: hair slip, where the hair releases from the hide. It is bacterial. Bacteria break down the flesh side, the follicles let go, and the cape is finished. The trade guidance is consistent that a hide either chilled properly or thoroughly salted drastically lowers the chance of slippage, which makes slip a storage failure far more often than a skill failure.

Every line there is a condition a room either holds or does not. The salting window in particular is a real argument for controlled space: an unheated Ontario outbuilding in November sits below 40 F for weeks, and a hide salted in it never draws properly.
The Cold Box: Freezing Capes Properly
For the frozen side, a refrigerated container gives a studio one address for the entire backlog instead of four. Capes go in flat, rolled and bagged the way the trade specifies, on shelving rather than stacked in a heap so nothing sets with a permanent wrinkle. The unit holds temperature reliably through a warm-fall spike, which a garage chest freezer on a hot day does not always do, and a logging thermometer proves it did.
The operational gain is inventory control. One door, one list, one temperature to check. Studios that consolidate the backlog into a single cold room stop losing track of whose animal is where, which matters when every item belongs to a client who is waiting and asking. The Salt Warning Nobody Gives You About Steel
Here is the caution we would rather give you before you buy than after, because it is about our own product. Salt attacks steel. The tanning literature is blunt that salt will rust metal and the resulting rust then stains the hide, which is why salted hides belong in airtight plastic or wooden containers, never loose against metal. A shipping container is steel. So a studio storing salted hides needs them boxed or bagged properly inside the container, not piled on the floor or against the walls.
That is not a reason to avoid a container; it is a reason to fit it out correctly. Sealed bins on shelving, kept up off the floor, solve it entirely, and keeping stock off the floor is what the shop-layout guidance recommends anyway so beetles and moths can be spotted early. But a supplier who sells a taxidermist a steel box without mentioning that salt and steel disagree is not being straight with them.
The Second Box: Chemicals, and What We Will Not Claim
The chemical side is where we have to be most careful about what a container is and is not. Formaldehyde-bearing bacteriostats and tanning solutions are genuinely hazardous: a 37 percent formaldehyde solution is a Category 3 flammable liquid with a flash point around 50 C, sealed containers of it can rupture when heated, and its vapours can form explosive mixtures in air. Solvents, paints, and adhesives stack on top of that.
The trade standard is a dedicated metal flammable-storage cabinet plus active exhaust that pulls fumes away from the breathing zone. Read that carefully, because it defines our role precisely: a container is not a flammables cabinet and we will never sell it as one. What a vented dry container can honestly be is the separate, lockable, ventilated room that houses a proper flammables cabinet, well away from the studio, from ignition sources, and critically from the cold box’s compressor and electrics. The segregation is the value. The certified cabinet inside it is still something the studio buys and the fire authority signs off on.

Where Our Work Ends
Two separate obligations, and neither is ours. Chemical storage of formaldehyde-bearing and acidic tanning products falls under WHMIS and occupational-safety rules: the studio owns its safety data sheets, its ventilation design, spill control, and fire separation, working with its supplier and fire authority. And possession of the animal itself, tags and seasons and what may legally be held, stays between the hunter, the studio, and Ontario’s rules.
