The shipping container industry has accumulated a layered vocabulary over 70 years. Military terminology overlaps with maritime terminology, ISO technical standards overlap with regional Canadian vernacular, and buying-and-selling shorthand overlaps with all of it. “Most of the confusion people bring into the yard is just vocabulary,” says Paul LeBlanc, who founded Van Blanc in 1995 and spent 40 years in Asian trade before that. “A farmer calls it a sea can, a contractor calls it a conex, the spec sheet says ISO 668, and they’re all standing in front of the same box. Once you know the words, picking the right unit gets a lot easier.”

What Do Canadians Call a Shipping Container?

The same product goes by different names depending on region, industry, and historical context. All these names describe the same modern ISO 668 standard product.

Shipping Container

The generic global term. Used in international trade, retail buying, and casual conversation. Any standard ISO 668 container (10ft, 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, 53ft).

Sea Can

Canadian dock vernacular dating to the 1970s. Originated with Halifax, Montreal, and Vancouver longshoremen describing containers arriving on cargo ships. Still the most common Canadian buyer term. Full guide: Why is it called a Sea Can?

C-Can

Canadian Forces vernacular from the 1980s, derived from American CONEX military containers. The “C” stands for “Container” or “Canadian”; “Can” is short for container. Still common in Canadian military, surplus, and prairie buyer contexts. Full guide: C-Can For Sale Canada

Conex Box

Acronym for “Container, Express.” Originated with the U.S. Army Transportation Corps in 1952. The original 1952 Conex was smaller than today’s ISO standard, but the name persists as legacy military terminology now applied to modern ISO containers. Full guide: Conex Box Canada

Intermodal Container

The technical industry term. Describes the container’s defining capability: transferring between transportation modes (ship, rail, truck) without unloading cargo. Invented by Malcom McLean in 1956. Full guide: Intermodal Container Canada

ISO Container

Sea Container, Cargo Container, Freight Container

Generic synonyms for shipping container. “Freight container” is the UK and Commonwealth term. All identical products.

Steel Storage Container

Marketing term used by some sellers, particularly for the secondary-market storage application. The product is the same standard ISO container.

What Are the Standard Shipping Container Sizes?

Standard shipping container sizes run from 10ft up to 53ft, all built to the same 8ft (2.44m) width except the wider 53ft. The size names below give external dimensions and interior volume, so you can match a box to your site and your load before you buy. 10ft Container (ISO 1D)

2.99m external length × 2.44m wide × 2.59m tall. Internal 16.0 m³ volume. The smallest standard size, rare in the secondary market but useful for tight residential sites. Full guide: 10ft Shipping Container Canada

20ft Container (ISO 1C)

6.058m × 2.44m × 2.59m external. Internal 33.2 m³. The most-delivered size in the Canadian secondary market. Also the baseline for the TEU measurement unit. Full guide: 20ft Container Dimensions

20ft High Cube (ISO 1CC)

Same length and width as 20ft Standard but 2.90m external height (vs 2.59m). 30 cm extra interior headroom. Less common but available for conversions needing height.

40ft Container (ISO 1AA)

12.19m × 2.44m × 2.59m external. Internal 67.7 m³. Equivalent to 2 TEU (also called 1 FEU). Workhorse size for serious volume needs. Full guide: 40ft Container Dimensions

40ft High Cube (ISO 1AAA)

Same length and width as 40ft Standard but 2.90m external height. Internal 76.3 m³. The most common conversion size for residential and commercial builds.

45ft High Cube (ISO 1EEE)

13.71m × 2.44m × 2.90m external. Internal 86.0 m³. Premium length option for buyers needing more space than 40ft.

53ft High Cube

16.15m × 2.59m × 2.90m external. Internal approximately 107 m³. North American intermodal only, so it does NOT load on ocean ships. Wider than other ISO sizes (8’6″ vs 8’0″). See the full breakdown of the 53ft container in Canada.

High Cube (HC or HQ)

Any container that is 2.90m external height (9’6″) instead of the standard 2.59m (8’6″). 30 cm of extra interior headroom. Most common in 40ft and 45ft sizes. Full guide: High Cube vs Standard

Standard (or Standard Height)

The original 2.59m external height (8’6″). Internal 2.39m. Most 20ft containers in the secondary market are Standard height.

What Do the Shipping Container Grades Mean?

Container grades are the industry-standard condition tiers used to describe and price containers in the secondary market. There are four, from newest to oldest: One-Trip, Cargo Worthy, Wind & Watertight, and As-Is. One-Trip (or “New”)

Essentially new container: manufactured in China, used for one ocean voyage to North America, then sold into the secondary market. The industry calls it one-trip because it made exactly one loaded voyage. Factory paint, intact gaskets, CSC plate current, typically 0-2 years old. Cargo Worthy (CW or CWO)

Used container that passes IICL-6 inspection criteria and holds a current CSC plate certifying it for international ocean cargo service. 8-12 years post-manufacture, structurally sound, weather-tight. Full guide: Cargo Worthy Container Canada

Wind & Watertight (WWT)

Sealed against weather but no longer certified for international ocean cargo service (CSC plate expired or removed). 10-15 years post-manufacture, structurally sound for stationary land use. The budget grade for storage uses. Full guide: Wind & Watertight Container

As-Is

Older containers (15+ years) with possible structural issues. Sold cheap for cladding, modification donors, or specialty applications. Buyer beware, and inspect carefully.

Which Standards and Certifications Govern Shipping Containers?

Shipping container standards and certifications are the international rules that make every box interchangeable and verifiable. ISO specifications define the dimensions, testing, and coding; the CSC Convention governs safety for ocean transport; and IICL and BIC handle inspection criteria and owner-code registration. Knowing these lets you read a CSC plate and confirm what you’re actually buying.

ISO 668

The International Organization for Standardization specification for container classification, dimensions, and ratings. Defines the 10ft, 20ft, 40ft, 45ft, and 53ft standard sizes. Read how the ISO 668 spec shapes every box

ISO 1496

Container specification and testing standard. Mandates water, lift, stacking, and racking tests for every production run. Five parts: -1 general cargo, -2 thermal/refrigerated, -3 tank, -4 dry bulk, -5 platform.

ISO 6346

Container coding and identification standard. The 11-character code (4-letter owner code + U + 6-digit serial + check digit) found on every container. Allows global tracking and customs processing.

ISO 1161

Corner fitting specification. Defines exact dimensions, geometry, and material of the eight corner castings on every standard container. Designed for 48-tonne shear loads.

CSC Convention

International Convention for Safe Containers. Adopted by the IMO in 1972. Mandates CSC plate, inspection schedule (first inspection within 5 years, then every 30 months), and safety standards for international ocean transport.

CSC Plate

Aluminum plate riveted to a container’s cargo doors. Shows manufacturer, manufacturing date, owner code, max gross weight, allowable stacking weight, rack test load, next inspection date. The buyer-readable verification of CSC compliance.

IICL (Institute of International Container Lessors)

Washington DC-based trade association of the marine container leasing and chassis provider industry. Publishes the industry-standard inspection criteria used worldwide (currently IICL-6, released 2016).

IICL-6

Current container inspection criteria manual. Defines repair vs reject vs accept thresholds for every container component. Used by certified inspectors at port depots before resale into the secondary market.

BIC (Bureau International des Containers)

Paris-based registration authority that issues container owner codes (the 4-letter prefix on every ISO 6346 code). Ensures global uniqueness of container identification.

Refrigerated Container Terms

Reefer

Industry slang for refrigerated container. The standard 20ft or 40ft HC Reefer maintains temperatures from -30°C to +30°C, with insulated walls (75-100mm polyurethane foam) and an integrated refrigeration unit. Full guide: Refrigerated Container Canada

Freezer Container

Canadian buyer term for a reefer operating at frozen temperatures (-18°C to -30°C). Same hardware as any reefer; just operating at a lower setpoint. Full guide: Freezer Container Canada

Refrigeration Unit (or “the Reefer Unit”)

The integrated refrigeration machinery on a reefer container, typically built by Carrier Transicold, Thermo King, or Daikin. Mounts on one end of the container envelope. Requires 3-phase 380-460V power.

Carrier Transicold

Dominant reefer refrigeration manufacturer worldwide. Product lines include PrimeLINE (premium efficient), NaturaLINE (CO2 refrigerant for sustainability), and OptimaLINE.

Thermo King

Trane Technologies subsidiary. Major reefer refrigeration unit manufacturer competing head-to-head with Carrier. Founded 1938.

Genset (Generator Set)

Diesel-powered electrical generator that attaches to a reefer container during road transport, providing power when grid electricity isn’t available. Increases operating cost vs grid power.

Reefer Point

Designated electrical connection point (typically 3-phase 380-460V) at a port, depot, or stationary site for plugging in reefer containers.

ATP (Agreement on the International Carriage of Perishable Foodstuffs)

International treaty governing refrigerated transport equipment used for perishable food in international trade. Reefer containers carrying perishables across international borders must meet ATP specifications.

Container Parts and Components

Corner Casting

Rectangular steel fitting at each of the eight corners of a container (4 top, 4 bottom). Designed by Keith Tantlinger in 1955. Accepts twistlocks for stacking, crane lifting, and chassis coupling.

Twistlock

Metal device that slips into a corner casting opening and rotates 90 degrees to lock containers together (or to crane spreaders or chassis trailers). 48-tonne shear strength rating.

Cargo Doors

The two swinging doors at one end of a container. Open 270 degrees against the side walls. Sealed with marine-grade EPDM gaskets. Closed with cam-lock locking rods.

Locking Rods (or Cam-Locks)

Vertical steel rods on the cargo doors that rotate to engage cam-locks at top and bottom of the door frame. Standard container security mechanism.

Gaskets

Marine-grade EPDM rubber seals around the cargo doors that compress against the door frame when closed. Critical for weather-tight performance. Typically need replacement every 10-15 years.

Corten Steel (or Weathering Steel)

The high-strength alloy used in container construction. Forms a stable protective rust patina when exposed to weather, eliminating the need for ongoing painting. ASTM A242 or ASTM A588 specifications.

Patina

The protective oxide layer that forms on Corten steel surface. Looks like orange-brown rust but is actually a stable corrosion-resistant film. Develops over 6 months to 3 years.

Tropical Hardwood Plywood Floor

Standard 28mm thick container floor made from apitong or keruing wood (Dipterocarpus species), 19-21 ply construction with phenolic glue. Rated for forklift point loads up to 7,260 kg per axle.

Corrugation

The wave pattern stamped into container side walls and roof. Provides structural rigidity. Standard depth 36mm.

Fork Pockets

Built-in openings in the bottom side rails of a container for forklift handling. Typically 355mm wide, 115mm tall, with 2,050mm centre-to-centre spacing on a 20ft container.

Vent

Small ventilation openings on container side walls allowing limited air exchange. Standard dry containers have minimal venting (4 small vents typical). Modified ventilation for specific cargo types.

Operations and Logistics

TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit)

Standard global capacity measurement. A 20ft container = 1 TEU. A 40ft = 2 TEU. Global container ship capacity measured in TEU (mega-ships exceed 24,000 TEU).

FEU (Forty-foot Equivalent Unit)

Equivalent to 2 TEU. Used in shipping industry for capacity tracking.

Tilt-Deck Truck (or Roll-Back, Beavertail)

Specialized flatbed truck with a rear deck that pivots to ground level for loading and unloading containers. Standard delivery equipment for shipping containers across North America. our delivery and placement process

Tare Weight

The empty weight of a container. 20ft: 2,200-2,300 kg. 40ft: 3,800-4,100 kg. Stamped on the CSC plate.

Payload (or Max Payload)

Maximum cargo weight a container is rated to carry per ISO 1496. 20ft: 21,750 kg. 40ft: 26,580 kg.

Max Gross Weight

Container plus cargo combined. 20ft: 24,000 kg per ISO 1496 (some 1CC up to 36,000 kg per 2016 amendment). 40ft: 30,480 kg. Full guide: Container Weight Canada

Break-Bulk Cargo

Loose cargo loaded and unloaded by hand (or with non-containerized equipment), as opposed to containerized cargo. The pre-McLean shipping system that containerization replaced.

FCL (Full Container Load)

Shipper has enough cargo to fill an entire container. Container is dedicated to one shipper.

LCL (Less than Container Load)

Shipper has cargo that fills less than a full container. Multiple shippers share one container.

Cargo Securement

Techniques for securing cargo inside a container during transport: lashing straps, dunnage bags, bracing, wooden blocking. Critical for ocean transport where containers experience parametric rolling.

Industry Players

CIMC (China International Marine Containers)

The world’s largest container manufacturer since 1996. Shenzhen, China. 12 production bases. 2 million containers per year. 56% of global dry marine container market.

Singamas Container Holdings

Hong Kong-listed container manufacturer. 4 factories in China + 1 in Vietnam. 320,000 TEU annual capacity. Second-largest manufacturer.

Maersk Container Industry (MCI)

Danish reefer container specialist. Developed Star Cool platform. Acquired by CIMC in 2021.

Malcom McLean (1913-2001)

North Carolina trucking executive who invented modern containerized shipping in 1956. Founded Sea-Land Service. SS Ideal-X voyage April 26, 1956 is the canonical birth date of containerization.

Keith Tantlinger (1919-2011)

Mechanical engineer who designed the corner casting and twistlock that made global containerization work. Worked with McLean at Pan-Atlantic Steamship. 79 US patents. Gibbs Brothers Medal 2010.

Sea-Land Service

The first commercial container shipping line, founded by Malcom McLean in 1956. Grew to 27,000 containers and 36 ships by late 1960s. Acquired by Maersk in 1999. Brand retired 2023.

Triton, CAI, SeaCube, Textainer, DCLI

Major container leasing companies. Together own ~54% of the global container fleet (2020 data).

Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, COSCO, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, Evergreen, HMM, Yang Ming, ZIM

Top 10 global container shipping lines. Together handle ~95% of east-west trade.

Buying and Selling Terms

Broker

Container seller without physical inventory. Takes buyer’s payment, then sources whatever container is closest at a depot. Buyer doesn’t see the specific unit before delivery. Real Yard (or Family Yard)

Container seller with physical inventory at a yard the buyer can visit. Allows the buyer to walk the row, inspect specific units, and pick the one to be delivered. COD (Cash on Delivery)

Payment made when the container arrives at the buyer’s property, not before. The buyer-protective payment model used by legitimate Canadian container yards. Distinguishes real yards from broker scams that demand wire transfer or deposit before delivery.

Pick-Your-Box

Van Blanc’s structural differentiator: walking the Brantford yard and selecting the specific container you want delivered, rather than accepting whatever depot inventory a broker ships. The only model that allows verification of grade, condition, and ISO codes before payment.

Depot

Container storage and inspection facility at major ports where retired-from-service containers enter the secondary market. Canadian depots near Vancouver, Halifax, Montreal, Prince Rupert, and Toronto/GTA.

Pre-Modification

Cutting and welding container openings (windows, doors, plumbing penetrations, utility entries) at the seller’s yard before delivery, rather than on the buyer’s property. Faster and cheaper than on-site steel work.

Conversion

The process of modifying a container into a structure: home, restaurant, bar, office, workshop, garage, ADU. Industry term for container-as-building applications.

Cargotecture (or Arkitainer)

Portmanteau terms for shipping container architecture as a building method. Used in architectural and design publications.

Sub-Panel

Electrical panel inside a container for distributing power to fixtures, outlets, and equipment. Standard 60-200 amp depending on use case. Must be installed by Licensed Electrical Contractor with ESA inspection.

ESA (Electrical Safety Authority)

Ontario authority that inspects electrical installations. All electrical work in container conversions must be performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor and inspected by ESA.

TSSA (Technical Standards and Safety Authority)

Ontario authority that inspects gas installations, fuel systems, elevators, and pressure equipment. Relevant for container restaurants and other conversions using natural gas or propane.

AGCO (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario)

Ontario authority for liquor licensing. Container bars require AGCO Liquor Sales Licence the same as stick-built bars.

CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency)

Federal authority for food safety standards. Relevant for container restaurants and food-service operations.

Public Health Unit (PHU)

Local Ontario authority for food premises inspection. Pre-opening inspection required for any container restaurant, food service, or commercial kitchen build.
