PODS gives those as exterior measurements and calls them approximate, so the usable space inside each unit is a little smaller. The 16 ft unit is the closest match to a 20 ft shipping container. Even so, the inside of the 20 ft is bigger. CN lists its usable cube at 1,169 cu ft, more than the whole outside envelope of the 16 ft PODS (about 1,024 cu ft).
Read the fine print on timing. The pods.ca Toronto page says the first 30 days are included in the price, then rent runs monthly if you need it. The PODS storage FAQ bills every storage rental by the month, with a one-month minimum that starts the day the unit is delivered. A move that wraps up inside those first 30 days may never see a second rent charge. Storage that runs past them is where buying a container instead of a pod is worth modelling.
pods.ca also advertises a bundle that waives delivery and pickup fees on rentals of three months or longer. That helps a long PODS rental on fees, but the monthly rent still runs for as long as the goods sit inside.

PODS in Canada runs from a short list of metro markets. The crossover month is simple arithmetic: divide the delivered container price by the PODS monthly rent. We ran it against the lowest monthly on-site rate pods.ca advertises. We also left out PODS delivery and pickup fees, since pods.ca advertises waiving them on rentals of three months or longer. Room for a full house
PODS sizes its largest unit for a home of 1,200 sq ft or smaller. By PODS’s own guidance, a 3,000 sq ft house fills about three 16 ft units, a load our 40 ft containers were built to swallow. Each of those units carries its own monthly rent and its own service fees, so the bill scales with the house.
A 40 ft high cube holds 2,689 cu ft by CN’s figures, and a 40 ft standard holds 2,395 cu ft. Three 16 ft PODS add up to roughly 3,072 cu ft of outside envelope, a bit less inside. One 40 ft high cube carries most of that load in a single box. Add a 20 ft unit at 1,169 cu ft and the rest fits with room to spare. 1. PODS for an inter-city move with overlap
You sold the Toronto house, closing is in three weeks, and the new place in Ottawa is ready in five. PODS drops a 16 ft unit in Toronto, you load over the weekend, PODS carries it to Ottawa, holds it two weeks, then delivers to your new driveway. Most of that cost is the carry plus up to one month of rent. With a container you buy, the loaded trip between cities is a separate tilt-deck haul you book with a carrier. At the end the box is yours, sitting at the Ottawa house as storage.
2. Driveway storage for a renovation under 8 months
You are gutting the basement, replacing floors throughout or staging the home for sale. The work runs three to seven months. A PODS unit in the driveway bills for every month the reno runs. You bought acreage in Muskoka, Haliburton or the Kawarthas and need storage for ATVs, snowmobiles, boats and tools. The container becomes the year-round building on the property. Cottage country sits outside the two Ontario markets PODS lists, and where a pod is available the rent runs for as long as you hold the land.
You want a permanent structure: a backyard or job-site office, a workshop or man-cave, a vehicle garage or a garden suite. A PODS unit is a rental and goes back the way it came. It runs between your home policy, the rental agreement and any contents plan the company sells as an add-on. Off-premises coverage under a typical home policy has its own limits and exclusions, and the answer differs by insurer. Before signing, make a five-minute call to your broker and ask about goods stored in a portable container off your property.
A container you own, on your own property, is the simpler case. It is your structure on your land, insured the way your broker adds any outbuilding, and the contents fall under the same conversation.
