Why Corten weathering steel does the work
Most shipping containers built since the 1970s are made of Corten steel, also called weathering steel, originally developed by US Steel in 1933 for outdoor industrial structures (railroad cars, bridges, water towers). The material was chosen for shipping containers because of a specific chemical behavior: when exposed to weather, the steel forms a tightly adhered surface oxide layer that blocks further oxygen and moisture penetration. The patina is the protection.
Unlike standard mild steel, where rust flakes off and exposes new metal to corrode, Corten steel rust stabilizes after 18 to 36 months of weather exposure and self-regenerates if scratched. The orange-brown patina you see on the typical used container is doing the protective work. Cosmetic appearance and structural integrity are separate concerns.
The Corten steel chemistry that matters
Corten contains copper (0.2-0.5%), chromium (0.5-1.25%), and small amounts of nickel and phosphorus added to the carbon-steel base. These alloying elements alter the oxide layer’s crystal structure so it adheres tightly to the underlying metal rather than flaking. The protective effect is meaningful: tests show Corten loses about 1/4 to 1/3 the steel mass per year compared to standard A36 mild steel under the same atmospheric exposure.

The five things that actually kill a shipping container
Containers do not fail like cars do. There is no engine to seize, no transmission to wear out. They fail in five specific patterns, listed in order of how often Van Blanc sees them on used buy-backs.
- Roof pinholes from pooled water. The roof is the thinnest steel in the container (typically 1.6 to 2 mm). Water that pools in roof corrugations during freeze-thaw can eat through the steel in 10 to 20 years if untreated. This is the single most common cause of structural retirement. - Floor rot from chronic moisture. The 1.125 inch marine plywood floor absorbs water from below if the container is set on damp ground or experiences interior condensation. - Roof has multiple pinhole leaks and re-coating cannot keep up. Once the roof needs structural patches every year, replacement makes more economic sense than continued repair.
