Shipping Containers in Brantford Industry
Brantford is the Telephone City, and for most of its history it has also been a factory town. It still is. Advantage Brantford is the city’s economic development office. It places Brantford at the centre of a 400 km / 250 mile corridor. The office calls that corridor “the world’s richest concentration of auto resources,” and the local advanced manufacturing sector counts 22 companies and over 2,100 workers. They work out of 1.85 million square feet (172,400 square metres) of industrial space, with employers such as Tigercat Industries, Mott Manufacturing and Massilly North America on the list.
The 2026 manufacturing reset
In January 2026, Massilly North America announced a new Brantford facility to produce metal cans for Canada’s food industry. Advantage Brantford reports that the plan adds 50 new jobs to a workforce of 228. Container demand follows the manufacturing footprint. A new plant needs site offices for the build phase, then parts cages for production, equipment overflow for peak season and secure storage for the supply chain that feeds it.
That history matters when you call Van Blanc about a sea can, a c-can or a conex. Containers in Brantford do not show up empty in front yards. They show up on the back lots of small fabricators in the Henrick Street industrial area and behind machine shops on Park Road North. They sit on Brant County farms feeding the food-and-beverage manufacturers along Highway 24. And they land on driveways during the kitchen renovations that always seem to happen the same week the kids are home for March break. The shed lot up King George Road gets a fair hearing too, in the Old Hickory review from a Brantford yard.
Van Blanc has been part of that picture since 1995. Paul founded Van Blanc as an Asian trade company that summer and spent years flying between Brantford and the footwear factories of Guangzhou and Qingdao. On one of those trips, a Chinese shipping factory owner told him the steel boxes carrying his goods home were worth more than the goods inside. Paul listened, and he pivoted Van Blanc into containers. His son Christian started flying with him to Asia at the age of fifteen. Christian works the yard with Paul today. The two of them know what every kind of buyer in Brantford actually does with a sea can, because the customers walk in and tell them.
Walk Our Morton Avenue Yard
Van Blanc’s public yard at 90 Morton Avenue East is fifteen minutes from any address in the city, and a national listing cannot offer a Brantford buyer that. Here is what happens on it.
Drive Times to Morton Avenue East
- West Brant: 12 minutes
- Mayfair: 15 minutes
- Eagle Place: 8 minutes
- Echo Place: 10 minutes
- Paris (County of Brant): 15 minutes
- St. George (County of Brant): 18 minutes
- Burford (County of Brant): 20 minutes
- Onondaga and surrounding rural Brant: 15 to 25 minutes
Christian usually walks customers through the lot himself. He has the routine memorised. You start at the row of one-trips, the newest stock on the lot. They are essentially new: one trans-Pacific voyage and minimal cosmetic wear. It is the bin you buy when the container will be visible from the road or converted to a job-site office. He shows you the cargo-worthy row next. These units have 8 to 15 years of service behind them and have been inspected for re-certification. Surface rust, paint variance, a few honest dents. The kind of bin a contractor buys for tool storage or a Brant County farmer buys to lock up the feed bagger over winter. Then the wind-and-watertight row, with 12+ years in service and more cosmetic wear, but guaranteed dry inside. The right bin if you are storing the second tractor or the snowmobile in March.
You see the difference walking the yard. You do not see it on a website. That is why people drive in from Brantford and the surrounding townships rather than ordering off a phone. It is worth the drive for unbeatable quality, family customer service, and three decades of operating from this city.
Shipping Containers for Sale Near Me
Type shipping containers for sale near me from a Brantford postal code and the map fills with listings. Many of those containers are somewhere else: a depot in the GTA, a broker with a phone number, a Marketplace seller with a photo. The Van Blanc public yard is at 90 Morton Avenue East, off Wayne Gretzky Parkway a few minutes from the 403. It is open Monday to Thursday 9:30 to 5 and Friday 9:30 to 4, with no appointment. More than 200 graded containers sit in stock: 10ft, 20ft, 40ft, high cubes and reefers, from one-trip down to as-is. Every one is numbered, so the box you point at is the box that lands. The current rows, by size and grade are listed online, but the fifteen-minute walk answers the question better.
Sea cans for sale near me, steel containers for sale near me, cans for sale near me: one product, four names. The sea can page written for Brantford and Brant County buyers uses the word most of the county uses. A near-me buyer should check four things. Look for a street address you can drive to, a container number on the quote, a CSC plate on the door, and payment on delivery, not a deposit. Once the box is chosen you can collect it yourself or have it dropped. Most Brantford buyers take the tilt-deck, because the truck is fifteen minutes from the driveway and the driver sets the box exactly where the pad is.
Sea Can Buyers in Brantford and Their Uses
Most Canadians call them sea cans or c-cans. Industry buyers use intermodal container or ISO container. Veterans still call them conex boxes from their service days. A sea can is the same eight-foot-wide steel box that ocean ships move around the world, whatever the name. We deliver every type from our four Brantford yards. The buyer mix in this city splits roughly four ways.
Manufacturers: Overflow and Site Offices
Not all of Brantford’s 22 advanced manufacturers use containers, but the ones that do tend to use them at scale. Plants order parts cages and equipment overflow for peak season. We have built modular site offices for general contractors working on multi-phase builds across the Highway 403 corridor. Industrial buyers usually want a 20ft cargo worthy or one-trip with steel man-doors and an ESA-certified electrical fit-out if it will be occupied. Christian quotes those builds at a four-to-six-week lead time because the modification work happens in our yard before the bin leaves on the truck. He gives you a real lead time, not a hopeful one, and every quote includes the actual delivery date.
Brant County Farms and Feed Storage
Brant County is part of the Norfolk-Haldimand-Brant agricultural belt. The farms here run a mix of cash crops, livestock, and the cannabis grow operations that came in after tobacco crashed in the early 2010s. The same tobacco-country geography continues south of the county line, where our Vanessa delivery route down Highway 24 serves Norfolk smallholders who made the same pivot. Most farm buyers want a 40ft wind-and-watertight unit at the back of the field. The sticker price ranges depending on grade and current steel costs. We deliver on tilt-deck trucks that handle field access most national chains will not even quote on. Farm operators benchmarking 40ft pricing across grades can read what moves a 40ft container quote in Canada. It walks through how Standard versus High Cube, new versus used, and Pacific-port versus East-coast supply shape what a Brant County operator should expect to pay in 2026.
Brantford homeowners during a renovation
Renovation storage is the second-largest use case in the city by volume. The pattern is consistent. The kitchen rip-out happens in week one. The drywall and the cabinets and half the dining room furniture have to live somewhere for eight to twelve weeks. A 20ft sea can in the driveway is the cleanest answer. We tilt-deck deliver and place it where you want it. Most Brantford homeowners buy a 20ft WWT outright and resell it on Kijiji when they are finished. A dry, lockable box usually fetches most of what it cost. Our sells-only answer to the reno-storage question explains why we will point a six-week job elsewhere rather than sell it a container. For buyers who want long-term ownership but prefer to spread the cost, an equipment loan through your own bank or equipment financer is the usual route. We will supply the invoice and specifications they ask for. We also bring tilt-free delivery for buyers with finished interlock or new asphalt who do not want a sliding container marking up the driveway.
The Brantford small-business pop-up
This is the smallest segment but the fastest growing. Brantford has a craft-brewery scene now. There are food-truck operators who run a permanent stationary unit on a lot between the truck shifts. There are entrepreneurs converting 40ft high-cubes into backyard ADUs and short-term-rental studios. The buyer here usually wants one-trip grade with custom modifications, often paint-matched to a brand, sometimes with a roll-up serving window cut into the side. Van Blanc handles that build work too, so when the container lands at your location it is finished and ready to power up.
Which container size sells most in Brantford?
Brantford placements range from a downtown reno driveway to a working farm at the edge of the city to a manufacturing yard along the Highway 403 corridor. For buyers weighing 20ft versus 40ft versus 45ft against an unfamiliar placement, a size-by-size walk through the sea can range lays the dimensions side by side. It also covers the clearance and approach each one needs on a residential lot, an industrial pad or a farm laneway.
Most Brantford orders fall into one of four size buckets. Knowing which one you are buying for makes the rest of the decision easier.
| Size | Exterior | Common Brantford use | What moves the quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft Standard | 20′ × 8′ × 8’6″ | Driveway reno storage, farm equipment, contractor tool cage | Grade (WWT to one-trip) and steel costs; the entry-point size |
| 20ft High Cube | 20′ × 8′ × 9’6″ | Workshop with ceiling-mounted electrical, tall-equipment storage | Carries a premium over a standard 20ft for the extra foot of height |
| 40ft Standard | 40′ × 8′ × 8’6″ | Manufacturing overflow, agricultural feed-and-equipment, commercial inventory | More steel than a 20ft, so it sits higher; grade and supply still drive the figure |
| 40ft High Cube | 40′ × 8′ × 9’6″ | Modular site office (insulated), bunkhouse conversion, tiny home | Above a standard 40ft; any insulation or electrical fit-out adds to it |
| 45ft High Cube | 45′ × 8′ × 9’6″ | Specialty long-loads, custom commercial conversions | Lower-volume size, so availability and current stock weigh heavily |
| 53ft High Cube | 53′ × 8’6″ × 9’6″ | Domestic logistics, regional distribution, large-volume inventory | Largest box we stock; the most steel and the widest demand swings |
| 20ft / 40HC Reefer | refrigerated | Brewery cold storage, greenhouse refrigeration, food kiosk overflow | Highest of any size because of the refrigeration unit; often sourced to spec |
The outside of a box decides where it fits on your lot. The inside decides what fits in the box. The figures below come from Van Blanc’s own spec sheet for each size. The 53ft domestic high cube is the odd one out: it is built for North American rail and road under AAR rules and is not an ISO ocean container.
| Size | Inside (L × W × H) | Door opening (W × H) | Volume | Tare (empty) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft Standard | 19 ft 4 in × 7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 10 in (5.898 × 2.352 × 2.385 m) | 7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 5 in (2.343 × 2.280 m) | 1,172 cu ft (33.2 m³) | 4,982 lb (2,260 kg) |
| 40ft Standard | 39 ft 5 in × 7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 10 in (12.029 × 2.350 × 2.385 m) | 7 ft 8 in × 7 ft 5 in (2.340 × 2.280 m) | 2,395 cu ft (67.8 m³) | 8,333 lb (3,780 kg) |
| 40ft High Cube Dry | 39 ft 5 in × 7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 10 in (12.032 × 2.350 × 2.695 m) | 7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 5 in (2.340 × 2.575 m) | 2,689 cu ft (76.1 m³) | 8,775 lb (3,980 kg) |
| 45ft High Cube Dry | 44 ft 6 in × 7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 10 in (13.556 × 2.347 × 2.696 m) | 7 ft 8 in × 8 ft 5 in (2.340 × 2.585 m) | 3,040 cu ft (86.0 m³) | 10,800 lb (4,900 kg) |
| 53ft High Cube | 52 ft 4 in × 8 ft 2 in × 9 ft 1 in (15.951 × 2.489 × 2.769 m) | 8 ft 2 in × 9 ft 1 in (2.489 × 2.769 m) | 3,901 cu ft (110.5 m³) | 11,070 lb (5,020 kg) |
Price ranges depend on grade, current steel costs, and inventory at the time you call. The four-Brantford-yards setup means we usually have all seven sizes in stock at any given time, but specific colours, modifications, and reefer specs may need to be sourced. Christian will tell you what we have in the yard the day you call.
Cargo Worthy vs Wind & Watertight vs One-Trip
Where the Grade Labels Come From
Container grades are the trade’s condition system, and two standards sit underneath them. ISO 6346, in its August 2022 edition, sets the codes and markings every box carries. The Container Safety Convention (CSC), adopted through the IMO on 2 December 1972 and in force since 6 September 1977, puts a safety approval plate on every approved box. The Institute of International Container Lessors, organized in 1971, has set inspection and repair standards for more than 50 years. The grade tells you what your container will look like and how long it will last in your use. Marketing language has nothing to do with it.
One-Trip (essentially new). Manufactured in China or Vietnam, loaded with a single cargo for the trans-Pacific voyage, sold off in North America to offset the shipping cost. The bin has minor cosmetic wear from one ocean crossing. Original factory paint, no rust, doors operate cleanly. Functional life expectancy of 25-plus years. Right bin if the container is going to be visible from the road, converted to an office or living space, or branded with company logos. A 20ft one-trip sits at the top of the Brantford price range because it is closest to new, with the exact number moving on steel costs and current stock.
Cargo Worthy (CW). Used containers that have been re-inspected for international shipping certification. They have made multiple ocean crossings and show it. Surface rust spots, paint variance, occasional small dents, but the structural frame and floor are inspected for heavy-duty load capacity. Right bin for export businesses who need to load it back onto a ship, or for high-density industrial storage where the cosmetic wear does not matter. A 20ft CW lands in the middle of the Brantford range, below one-trip but above wind-and-watertight, with grade condition and steel costs setting the exact figure.
Wind & Watertight (WWT). Used containers that are guaranteed weather-resistant and rodent-proof but not re-certified for further international shipping. Visible cosmetic wear, surface rust on panels, occasional dents, faded paint. Doors close and seal. Right bin for farm storage, household reno storage, garden sheds, equipment shelter. Anything that lives stationary on land. A 20ft WWT is the most affordable grade we stock, which is why it suits storage that nobody needs to look at.
As-Is. Older units with structural questions. Floor damage, frame issues, or door problems. Sold as scrap-metal-priced bins for low-stakes storage or steel reclamation. A 20ft As-Is unit is the cheapest bin on the lot because its value tracks the scrap-steel market rather than its usefulness as storage. We carry these but rarely recommend them unless you know exactly what you are buying for.
If you are not sure which grade fits your use case, the simplest filter is: will anyone other than you ever see this container? If yes, lean one-trip. If no, lean WWT and save the money. Christian will walk you through it before you commit.
Brantford Delivery, Step by Step
Most of the friction in a container purchase happens on delivery day. Here is what a Van Blanc delivery to a Brantford address looks like, with no surprises.
From our Morton Avenue East yard, a 20ft load gets to most addresses in the city within 30 minutes of leaving the lot. A County of Brant farm might be 20 minutes further. We use tilt-deck trucks for almost all standard residential and rural deliveries. The truck pulls up, the deck angles down, the container slides off onto your prepared surface. For the manoeuvre we need 60 feet of straight-line clearance for a 20ft container, and 120 feet for a 40ft. Height clearance of about 14 feet, your driveway gate, tree branches, and any low power lines all need to clear that. Width clearance of about 10 to 12 feet for the truck.
Does a Container Need a Concrete Slab?
No. A level, well-drained base under the container does the job, and a poured slab is optional. The number one container failure mode we see in the Brant region is rust at the floor frame from poor pad preparation. Water pools under the container during freeze-thaw cycles, and the floor steel starts to corrode from underneath. The fix is simple and adds maybe an hour of prep time before the truck arrives. Set the container on four pressure-treated 6×6 timbers spaced evenly along the length, or on poured concrete piers, or on a level gravel pad with a slight grade for runoff. Do not set the container directly on grass, dirt, or low spots. Christian will walk you through pad prep when you book.
For buyers with finished interlock, new asphalt, or sensitive surfaces, we offer tilt-free delivery using a horizontal lift system. The container stays level throughout the off-load. There is a premium on this service, and Christian will quote it transparently before you book. We also offer crane delivery for tight access sites where a tilt-deck cannot manoeuvre.
Lead time from order to in-driveway is one to three days for most Brantford addresses. Custom modifications add four to six weeks. Reefer units sometimes need to be sourced if we do not have the spec on hand. Whatever the lead time is, we tell you the actual date when you book.
What a Yard Walk Saves You
Most container buying in Canada now happens on a phone. You read a page, you call a number, you wire a payment, the truck arrives a week later. That works fine for buyers who already know exactly which grade and size they need. For everyone else, walking a yard before you pay is the difference between buying the right container and buying one you have to live with.
Fifteen Minutes in the Rows
- How much cosmetic wear is fine for your use case. A grade label says “Wind & Watertight.” Walking past three of them shows you what that means in real life: light surface rust on the panels, a couple of dents the size of a fist, paint variance from blue to grey on the same unit. If your container is going behind the barn, that is exactly fine. If it is going beside your house, you would rather pay the one-trip premium. You decide that in five minutes by looking, not by reading.
- Whether the dent matters. A photo on a website cannot tell you whether a corner-post dent affects how the door seals. Standing next to the unit, opening the door, watching the gasket close, you know in a second. Christian or Paul will point out the dents that matter and the ones that do not.
- What questions you did not know to ask. Floor types, interior height clearance, vent placement, lock-box location, paint adhesion, gasket age. People who walk the yard ask better questions on the drive home than people who order over the phone. The cost of a wrong purchase is bigger than the cost of an hour-long round trip.
The yard is open Monday to Thursday 9:30 to 5 and Friday 9:30 to 4; the yard hours and directions are on the contact page. There is no appointment to book and no sales pressure to push back on. Most people stay twenty minutes, ask the questions on their list, get a clearer sense of what they need, and decide later. Some of those people order the same week. Some order three months later. Some order from somebody else after they realize their use case is simpler than they thought. Paul tells them what he would tell a friend: at that scale, the cheapest WWT off Kijiji is fine.
The buyers who do come back tell us the same thing: worth the drive. Van Blanc is mid-market on price by design, so the saving they mean is the wrong unit they did not buy. That is the calculation we want you to make, even if it ends with you not buying from us.
Portable Storage Without a Monthly Bill
Brantford has no shortage of portable storage: franchise bins, mobile lockers, warehouse-and-return programs, most of them renting by the month. What the listings rarely mention is that a yard selling the same steel boxes is right here in town. A delivered container does everything a portable storage unit does, parked on your own property, and you can own it outright and never see a monthly invoice again.
The sort we give every buyer goes like this. Anything open-ended is cheaper owned: a trades business, a market garden, a garage that has needed a purge since 2019. For a Brantford address the delivery is a fifteen-minute run from Morton Avenue. Walk the yard first, pick the exact box, and the portable storage question answers itself.
Facebook Sea Can Listings That Never Arrive
Van Blanc gets the same call almost every week.
The customer has seen a Facebook Marketplace listing for a 20ft sea can in Brantford below our price. They want to know if we will match it. We tell them no, and we tell them why. Two weeks later, the same customer calls back. The seller is unreachable. The phone number stopped working. The driveway delivery never happened. The wire transfer or e-transfer is gone. They are out the money and they still need a container.
It happens well beyond Brantford. In January 2021, CBC News reported that 12 people said they had lost almost 70,000 dollars between them on shipping containers that never arrived. The fraudsters had borrowed the names of real container companies to make their ads look legitimate. The pattern behind disposable container-broker websites and Facebook listings rarely changes. Expect a suspiciously low price, urgency to wire payment, no physical address, no yard you can visit, and then a seller who disappears.
Paul LeBlanc, owner: “I have been in containers for nineteen years and Asian trade for forty before that. I have not seen anything like this since the early days of email phishing. The bin priced well below the market on Facebook is the bin that does not exist. Many people call us saying they can get a bin cheaper on Facebook. Two weeks later they call back, scammed. Don’t fall for it.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the average cost of a 20ft or 40ft shipping container in Brantford?
Van Blanc does not publish an average, because the number moves with grade, size, delivery distance from our Brantford yards and the steel market. Wind and watertight is the most affordable grade, cargo worthy sits in the middle and new one-trip is highest. A 40ft carries up to 3,780 kg of steel against 2,260 kg for a 20ft, so it sits higher in every grade. Call 519-754-6844 with the size and your postal code and we will price the container and delivery, usually the same day.
Where can I find shipping containers for sale in Brantford?
At the Van Blanc public yard, 90 Morton Avenue East, Unit 1-B, one of our 4 Brantford yards. Van Blanc has sold shipping containers here since 1995, from used wind and watertight up to new one-trip, plus reefers. You can walk the rows with Paul or Christian during yard hours, with no appointment, and pick the exact box before you buy. Local Brantford delivery is usually 1 to 3 days.
Who has the cheapest shipping containers in Brantford?
The cheapest container is the one that does the job at the lowest landed cost: the box, plus delivery, plus placement. By grade, as-is and wind and watertight units cost least, cargo worthy costs more and new one-trip costs most. Delivery is charged by the kilometre from Brantford, so a short run inside the city keeps the landed number down. Walk away from any listing priced far below every yard in the region, because a box that never arrives is the most expensive one of all.
Can I use a shipping container for on-site storage in Brantford?
Yes. On-site storage is one of the most common reasons Brantford businesses, contractors, and homeowners order from us. A 20ft or 40ft storage container on a gravel pad gives you secure, weather-tight storage on site without putting up a permanent building. We deliver and place it on your property on a tilt-deck truck.
What are Van Blanc’s yard hours in Brantford?
Monday to Thursday 9:30 to 5 and Friday 9:30 to 4, at 90 Morton Avenue East, Unit 1-B, off Wayne Gretzky Parkway a few minutes from the 403. No appointment is needed to walk the rows, and if the hours do not suit, a video call with the container number in the frame does the same job. Call 519-754-6844 before you leave if you want a specific grade pulled to the front.
Can I pick up a shipping container from your Brantford yards myself?
Ask when you order. A 20ft needs a tilt-deck or a flatbed with a crane or forklift at your end, so most Brantford buyers take our delivery instead. It is a fifteen-minute run and puts the box exactly on the pad. What every buyer can do is choose the unit in person, read its plate, and pay on the day it lands.
Where is the closest container store to Brantford?
The Van Blanc public yard at 90 Morton Avenue East sits off Wayne Gretzky Parkway, a short drive from anywhere in Brantford or Brant County. From West Brant or Mayfair, the drive is twelve to fifteen minutes. From the County of Brant towns of Paris, St. George, or Burford, it is fifteen to twenty minutes.
How fast can Van Blanc deliver a container to a Brantford address?
Most stock containers (20ft and 40ft, all three grades) deliver to a Brantford address within one to three days of your order. The four-Brantford-yards setup means we usually have inventory on hand. Custom modifications (insulated office, electrical fit-out, custom paint, ground-level office build) take four to six weeks because the work happens in our yard before the bin ships. Reefer units may need to be sourced if we do not have the spec on hand. Every quote we give includes the actual delivery date, a real lead time, not a hopeful one.
Will a car fit in a 20ft container?
A standard 20ft container is 19 ft 4 in long, 7 ft 8 in wide and 7 ft 10 in high inside. Its door opening is 7 ft 8 in wide. A subcompact or small sedan fits with no modification. A pickup truck or full-size SUV will not; you need a 40ft for that, or a 20ft High Cube modified with a tall door. We have built custom-modified container garages for Brantford homeowners. The most common request is a 40ft High Cube with a roll-up door at one end and a man-door on the side.
What’s the difference between a sea can, a c-can, and a shipping container?
Nothing. They are the same eight-foot-wide steel box. Sea can is the dominant Canadian residential and rural term. C-can is the shorthand contractors and casual buyers use. Shipping container is the global industry term, and professionals also say intermodal container or ISO container. Veterans sometimes call them conex boxes from their service days. We deliver every type from our Brantford yards, whatever you call it on the order form.
What is a one-trip container, and is it worth the extra money in Brantford?
A one-trip container has made a single loaded voyage from the manufacturer, so it is essentially new: clean paint, tight doors, and a 25-plus year service life. It costs more than a used Wind and Water Tight or Cargo Worthy unit. It is worth the premium when the container will be visible from the road, branded, painted, or converted to an office or living space. It also gives the longest service life and the best resale of any grade. Christian will match the grade to your Brantford site before you commit.
How long does a shipping container last in the Canadian winter?
Van Blanc’s own grade guide puts a one-trip container at 25 to 30 years in Ontario. A wind-and-watertight unit gives 15 to 20 years of useful storage life on a level pad with airflow underneath. The most common failure mode in Brantford is rust at the floor frame from poor pad preparation, water pooling under the container during freeze-thaw cycles. We can walk you through pad preparation when you order.
Do you sell rent-to-own shipping containers in Brantford?
No. Van Blanc sells containers outright and does not rent, lease, or offer rent-to-own. Past a few months, buying a used wind-and-watertight box normally costs less than renting one, and you can sell it on or ask us about buyback when you are done.
