Home Depot Sheds in Ontario: The Honest Guide

Where We Stand

A shipping container yard in Brantford wrote this. We have no relationship with Home Depot or with Arrow, Keter, Suncast, Lifetime or Handy Home Products, nobody pays us, and the steel boxes we sell compete with everything in this aisle. That is the bias, stated once. It also means we have nothing to gain from talking you out of a shed that fits your yard, and a lot of Home Depot sheds fit a lot of yards. The section on who should buy one is near the end and it is not short.

Product facts were checked on homedepot.ca and the manufacturers’ own sites on September 11, 2026. Home Depot’s online lineup runs to hundreds of listings and rotates by season, so model names below are the ones on the Canadian site today, used to show what each brand does.

Installed or DIY: The First Decision

Most retailers sell you a shed in boxes and wish you luck. Home Depot Canada will send a crew and build the base, and it is the only chain that will do both for any shed on the shelf. That single difference should shape how you shop the aisle, so it comes first. Rona is the other exception, with its Quebec-built Riopel sheds sold only with installation, and the Rona guide explains how that line works.

The program works from the product page. You tick “Get It Installed,” pick an assembly option, and an installer contacts you within 24 hours to schedule. Home Depot’s installers are insured and background-checked, the labour carries a one-year warranty, and the job includes anchoring where the ground allows it. There are base packages too: labour plus the materials to build a proper pad under the shed, priced separately from the shed itself. Delivery of a large shed to the site is an extra fee, quoted when you book. Scheduling runs 48 to 72 hours out depending on your availability.

Read that list against what a kit actually asks of you. A resin or metal shed needs a level base, three people, and most of a day. A wood kit needs a base, a weekend, a roofing job and a paint job. The installation program takes every one of those off your plate for a fee, which is exactly the trade a buyer with a bad back, no truck or no weekend should make. It is also the trade you should price honestly: once the shed, the base package, the install and the delivery are added up, the number is in the same neighbourhood as buildings that arrive finished, and that comparison is the last section of this page.

The Aisles, by Material

Home Depot Canada sorts sheds by material, and the material decides almost everything else: what it costs to own, what it asks of you each spring, and what it does under snow.

Two hundred and thirty-one Arrow listings is the number that explains the aisle. Home Depot is a metal-shed store first, resin second, wood third, which is the reverse of Costco, where the Costco lineup is resin-led with one wood brand and no metal to speak of.

Arrow: What a 10 psf Roof Means in Ontario

Arrow has anchored the big-box metal shed aisle for generations. The construction is consistent across the range: electro-galvanized steel wall and roof panels, hot-dipped galvanized frame parts, and a baked-on enamel finish. Arrow lists a 12-year limited warranty on the models we checked, longer than Lifetime’s ten. On paper that is a durable, low-maintenance building, and for the right job it is. Now the number Arrow prints in its own FAQ and nobody repeats in a listing: the roof snow load on all Arrow sheds is 10 pounds per square foot. The optional roof strengthening kit takes it to 15. For comparison, Lifetime’s standard resin roof is rated 23 and its snow kit takes it to 30. Ten pounds per square foot is what a modest fall of light, dry snow weighs. A foot of wet March snow in southern Ontario can weigh two to three times that. An Arrow shed in this province is a shed you rake after every significant storm, or a shed with the strengthening kit and a plan to rake it anyway. Two more things live outside the box. Arrow sheds ship without a floor; the floor frame kit is a separate purchase for the Classic and Select models, and it holds plywood you also buy. And Arrow sheds are light enough that the auger anchor kit, four steel augers with clamps and cable, is the difference between a shed and a kite. Home Depot Canada sells both kits on the same aisle, so add them to the cart the same day. Handy Home Products: What Is and Isn’t in the Box

Handy Home Products is Home Depot Canada’s wood shed brand, and the kits are the real thing: 2 by 4 framing, factory-primed LP engineered siding with a wood-grain emboss, pre-cut lumber, and a 15-year limited material warranty on models like the Berkley. The Somerset 10 by 18 is a 1,310 cubic foot building with a modern roofline; the Cumberland 10 by 16 ships with a floor frame; the Berkley 10 by 14 comes with the floor; the St. Claire is the classic 8 by 10; the Highland 8 by 6 pairs a wood frame with a Palram polycarbonate roof.

The line to read on every Handy Home listing is the one that says paint and shingles are not included. It is right there on the Somerset page, and it is true of most of the range. The kit gives you a primed, framed, sheathed building. You buy the shingles, the roofing nails, the drip edge, the paint and the base, and you supply the two days. Some models include a floor and some don’t, so the listing title matters: “with Floor” or “with Floor Frame” means what it says, and its absence means a slab or a floor you build.

None of that is a knock. The Handy Home kits sit at the honest middle: better framing than the bargain end, priced accordingly, with the finish work left to you or to Home Depot’s installer.

Keter, Suncast, Lifetime: The Resin Shelf

Home Depot’s resin shelf overlaps Costco’s almost model for model, so the material facts are already written. Keter’s polypropylene panels, steel-reinforced premium lines and moulded floors are in the Keter review. Lifetime’s dual-wall HDPE, steel trusses and the 23-to-30 psf snow kit story are in the Costco guide, and the same 8 by 10 sits on homedepot.ca with a full-length skylight along the roof ridge. Suncast fills the small and mid formats with rotating models.

What Home Depot adds to the resin shelf is choice and the installer. Forty-six Keter listings and forty-two Suncast listings means the size you want is probably there in more than one shape, and the installation checkbox turns a three-person Saturday into a booked morning. One resin detail worth repeating because it bites in Ontario: resin sweats. A closed resin shed on a September morning has condensation on the inside of every panel, and anything stored against a wall gets damp. Vents are the fix, and the listing tells you how many the model has. Steel has the same problem for the same reason, which is why we vent every container we convert.

When Home Depot Sheds Actually Get Cheap

“Home Depot sheds clearance” is one of the most-typed phrases around this topic, and the pattern behind it is simple. Sheds take floor space, floor space is worth money, and from late summer through fall Canadian stores need the room for snow blowers and Christmas. Home Depot Canada keeps a dedicated clearance filter for sheds and outdoor structures on its site, and the deepest markdowns land on display models and end-of-line kits at individual stores, which is why the clearance page for one location looks nothing like another’s.

Two honest cautions. A clearance display model has been assembled once, in a parking lot, by whoever was on shift; inspect the panels and count the hardware bag before you pay, because the return path on a clearance item is shorter than on a new kit. And the ads that circulate on social media every fall promising warehouse-club or home-centre sheds at a fraction of list are, as often as not, the same pattern as the marketplace container scam: a real brand’s photo, a fake checkout, a deposit that vanishes. Timing your own purchase against the season is worth doing in both directions. Resin and metal sheds are cheapest when nobody wants to build one, and the same logic runs the container market: winter is when the yard is quietest and the quotes are friendliest.

Is It Cheaper to Build a Shed or Buy One?

This is the question Google puts under every Home Depot shed search, so here is the honest arithmetic without numbers that go stale.

A site-built shed from lumber is cheaper than a kit only when your labour is free and your material list is disciplined. The moment you value your weekend, or you buy the lumber in three trips instead of one, the kit wins on cost, because the kit manufacturer bought the lumber by the boxcar and pre-cut it on a saw that does not make mistakes. A kit plus the installer is more expensive again, and is the right answer for anyone who would otherwise hire a handyman by the hour.

Against both, a used shipping container is the odd one out because there is no build. The cost is the box, the delivery and four level points under the corners. On a per-square-foot basis a used 20-footer lands close to a mid-range wood kit once you add the kit’s base, shingles and paint, and it arrives in an afternoon. Ninety Days, Original Packaging

Home Depot Canada’s return policy is straightforward and it is not Costco’s. Purchases can be returned to any Canadian store within 90 days, or 365 days if you paid with a Home Depot credit card or commercial account. The item has to be in its original condition, which the policy defines as unused and in its original packaging. Labour, delivery and installation fees are not refundable. Special-order and seasonal items can carry different windows, and the policy says to check at the time of purchase.

Translate that to a shed. An unopened kit goes back for 90 days, no argument. A kit you opened, started, and gave up on is a conversation at the returns desk, because “original packaging” is now a pile of cardboard in the recycling. An installed shed does not go back; the shed might, in theory, but the labour, the base package and the delivery are gone. That is the price of the installation program, and it is fair, but it means the decision to install is a decision to keep.

Home Depot vs Costco for a Shed

These two stores sell the same resin brands and compete for the same weekend, so the differences are worth a table. Canadian Tire sells the same brands in smaller formats with backyard delivery, and that dealer-store comparison is its own page.

The short version: buy at Costco if you are handy and value the ability to send it back; buy at Home Depot if you want the metal aisle, the wood kits, or a crew. Neither store will put a building on a farm lane, a job site or a lot with a narrow side gate and no room for a pallet, which is the point at which this stops being a retail decision at all.

The Ontario Checklist Before You Click Add to Cart

Then walk the site with the listing’s footprint in mind. Every kit shed goes where a wheelbarrow can go, which is the one genuine advantage a shed has over any building that arrives on a truck. If your only access to the back yard is a 30-inch gate, the shed aisle is your aisle, and nothing below changes that. Who the Home Depot Shed Is Right For

An Arrow metal shed is right for a low-value, low-moisture job in a yard where you will rake the roof: a mower, patio cushions, garden tools, a bike or two. It is the cheapest lockable building on the aisle, and with the anchor kit and the strengthening kit it lasts.

A Handy Home wood kit is right when you want a shed that looks like the house and you either enjoy the build or will pay Home Depot to do it. The bigger models are small workshops, and the 15-year material warranty is real.

The resin shelf is right for the suburban yard that never wants to paint anything, on a level base, with the snow kit. The installation program is right for anyone whose time is worth more than the fee, which is most working people, and it is the reason to pick Home Depot over Costco for the same Keter or Lifetime box.

The Home Depot aisle is wrong when the building will hold something worth stealing, when it will sit on a farm or a job site, when the site can’t take a pallet or a crew, when mice have already found the current shed, or when you need it standing this week rather than after a weekend and a scheduling call. When You’ve Outgrown the Aisle

A used shipping container is what people buy when they have priced the kit, the base package, the install and the delivery, and noticed the total buys a building that shows up finished. Here is the honest trade in both directions.

The box. It arrives built, on a tilt-deck truck that slides it onto four level points. No assembly, no shingles, no paint, no installer to schedule. Walls are 1.6 millimetre Corten steel, the floor is 27 millimetre marine plywood on steel cross-members, and the doors close on a gasket behind a lockbox and a padlock. It does not care about Ontario snow; the corner posts were built to carry loaded containers stacked eight high at sea, and the roof itself is tested under ISO 1496 with a 300 kilogram load on a patch the size of a doormat. It is rodent-proof by construction, and the squirrel that opened a kit shed in our squirrel-and-shed comparison would not have got past the first inch. The shed. It looks like a shed, and a container looks like a container. It goes where a truck can’t. It can be bought without a membership and, at Home Depot, with a crew. And a kit in its box can go back within 90 days; a used container holds its value and we offer buyback, but nobody refunds it in the parking lot.

The grade. For backyard or farm storage the right unit is a used wind-and-watertight box: doors seal, roof doesn’t leak, surface rust and a dent you stop noticing in a month. One-voyage units make sense when the box will be visible from the road or fitted out as a workshop with a man door and windows.
