Three painted container stalls in red, green and cream with their side hatches propped open as lit counters, under strings of warm bulbs on a snowy town square at dusk, with an old stone church behind

Quick Answer: In Ontario’s 2026 Christmas market calendar, Toronto’s Distillery Winter Village opens November 12. Niagara Falls follows on Sunday, November 15, Ottawa’s Lansdowne Park on November 20 and Kitchener’s Christkindl on December 3. An 8ft or 10ft container from Van Blanc becomes a Christmas market stall that locks up every night.

Christmas Markets in Ontario for 2026

A Christmas market is a short-season market of small stalls selling gifts, crafts, food and hot drinks, usually outdoors, in the weeks before Christmas. Ontario has dozens. Destination Ontario’s 2026 list carries 33 entries across nine regions. They run from the Dresden night market in Southwestern Ontario to Village Noel, a Northern Ontario Christmas village in Temiskaming Shores. Of those, 8 still say to check back for exact dates. The dates below come from each organizer’s own 2026 page, read on October 2, 2026. Where an organizer has not posted 2026 dates, the table says so instead of guessing from last year. Van Blanc, Paul LeBlanc’s family business since 1995, sells shipping containers from 4 Brantford yards and holds 4.9 stars across 140+ Google reviews. The second half of this guide is for the people who build the stalls, from shopfront and service windows for holiday kiosks to locking steel.

Distillery Winter Village in Toronto

The Distillery Winter Village is what most people mean by “the Toronto Christmas market,” and its own site says it once carried that name. The 2026 run opens with the tree lighting on Thursday, November 12 at 6 p.m. and closes January 3, 2027. Anyone pricing a Toronto stall of their own can start with containers sold and delivered across Toronto. Visitors need tickets on opening night and from 4 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets also apply from 4 p.m. on Thursdays in December and from 4 p.m. daily from December 14 to 31. Entry is free before 4 p.m., and all day Monday to Wednesday through December 13. Children 9 and under always get in free.

Christkindl at Kitchener City Hall

Kitchener’s Christkindl Market turns 30 in 2026. The City of Kitchener is marking it with two full weekends instead of one: December 3 to 6 and December 10 to 13. The City’s March 31 release says the market drew close to 70,000 visitors over its traditional four-day weekend last year. With the second weekend, the City expects more than 100,000 people. The shipping containers for sale near Kitchener City Hall suit a downtown committee that wants stalls of its own. Festivals and Events Ontario named Christkindl one of the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario in 2025. Destination Ontario describes it as modelled after medieval German markets. For 2026 vendors, the City weighed holiday fit, market experience, product quality and creativity alongside handmade, locally made goods. Commercial and fair-trade resale items were out. It preferred anyone able to work both weekends.

Lansdowne Park in Ottawa

The Ottawa Christmas Market opens on Friday, November 20, 2026, at Lansdowne Park. It runs Friday evenings from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., for five weekends ending December 20. One more night follows on Thursday, December 31, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., with a drone show and fireworks at TD Place. If you are building a stall of your own for a market in the capital, plan around Ottawa deliveries on the three-to-five-day run. The market has run since 2018. Between the weekends, a heated chalet on site can be booked for company holiday parties, Monday to Thursday from November 23 to December 23.

Niagara Falls in November

Niagara Falls has two November dates. The City of Niagara Falls runs Deck the Halls, its third annual holiday market, on Sunday, November 15. It fills the Niagara Falls Exchange at 5943 Sylvia Place and the Niagara Falls History Museum at 5810 Ferry Street. Each vendor booth is an 8′ x 7′ space, and applications closed September 27, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Twelve days later, the 16th annual Holiday HandMade Market fills the Niagara Falls Convention Centre from November 27 to 29, with 200+ makers selling inside. Organizers there who want steel stalls of their own can price boxes for sale in Niagara Falls. Makers who sell at both markets store the same stock in between.

Dates Still to Come

Two well-known markets have not posted 2026 dates on their own pages yet. Elora’s site still announces last year’s opening, November 14, 2025, with markets every Wednesday to Sunday until Christmas. It describes 88,000 twinkling lights, cedar chalet huts and fire tables in the village A.J. Casson called “Ontario’s Prettiest Village.” Destination Ontario’s entry for the Winter Market at the St. Lawrence Market also says to check back for exact dates. Holiday Hills at STACKT market in Toronto ran November 14 to December 28, 2025, and its page still shows those dates. STACKT describes itself as a shipping container marketplace with 25+ rotating storefronts. Steel storefronts are already part of Toronto’s market season, as container kiosks and pop-up shops in Canada show.

Stall Sizes Organizers Hand Out

Stall sizes at the Ontario Christmas markets we read sit in a tight range, and the organizers publish them. The Distillery assigns one of three cabin sizes, measured deep by wide. Christmas on the Bay and Deck the Halls both use an 8′ x 7′ footprint. A stall also spends far more hours shut than open, and that shapes how Van Blanc builds one.

Paul LeBlanc, owner, Van Blanc Ent. Inc.: “A market stall works about ten hours a day and sits shut for the other fourteen. We build it for the fourteen: padlock inside the lockbox, roll-up down on the sill, nothing left on the counter. In January the lights and tables go into the same boxes until November.”

Market or boxStall sizeWhat comes with it
The grey 8ft with a man door and a barred windowOutside 8’0″ x 7’2.6″Cargo doors, side man door, barred window
A 10ft that matches the eight-by-ten cabinAn 8 ft x 10 ft footprintCargo doors; some units with a roll-up already hung
Distillery Winter Village6′ deep x 6′ wide, 6′ deep x 10′ wide, or 8′ deep x 10′ wide1 basic work light and 1 basic space heater
Christmas on the Bay8′ wide x 7′ deep, walls 7′ high, 8′ roof peak24″ deep counter, 6′ long; 32″ side door; one 20-amp GFCI outlet
Deck the Halls, Niagara Falls8′ x 7′ spaceBooth space at the Exchange and the History Museum

The first two rows are the reason a container belongs in this guide. The 8′ x 7′ stall that two of these markets use is, within a few inches, the outside footprint of a Van Blanc 8ft. The Distillery’s largest cabin, 8′ deep by 10′ wide, covers the same ground as a 10ft. So the steel box and the market cabin take the same space, and the box locks like a safe. With a roll-up front framed at the yard, it works the season as a stall and spends the other eleven months as a storeroom.

Which Ontario Christmas Market Is Biggest?

Ontario keeps no official ranking, so each organizer’s own count is the fairest measure, though each is taken differently.

Distillery Winter Village, Toronto1 million visitors expected over 52 daysCabins in 3 sizes

By crowd, the Distillery leads, and its site points to Frommer’s naming it one of the best Christmas markets in the world. For a vendor, the better question is which crowd buys what you make, and where that much stock waits between market days. One answer is a short box behind the workshop, shelved and labelled. Christmas on the Bay, run by volunteers in Meaford’s Market Square, adds that weather moves an outdoor market’s attendance.

Vendor Applications and Deadlines

Vendor applications for 2026 have closed at the five Ontario Christmas markets in the table below. The windows ran from spring to late September, and some organizers keep a waitlist. A maker planning for 2027 should expect a similar calendar.

Food vendors need a certified food handler on site. For the kitchen itself, a container kiosk weighed against a food trailer covers the layout choices. In Meaford they also file Grey Bruce Public Health’s special event form at least a month ahead. The Distillery keeps open-flame cooking out of its cabins, in a designated outdoor cook area beside the vendor’s cabin. It also wants commercial general liability insurance for the whole event, move-in and move-out included. Christmas on the Bay asks for event liability insurance too. The Distillery restricts products that compete with its year-round shops, including candles, jewellery, coffee and hot chocolate.

Power, Heat and Light

Power at a Christmas market stall is thin at the two markets that publish it. A display that needs a kettle, a heater and three strings of lights has to be planned around that. A card reader on a shared circuit needs its own plan, and power for the card reader and the till walks through the load. The Distillery gives every cabin one basic work light and one basic space heater. Anything more goes through the festival’s preferred supplier at the vendor’s expense. Christmas on the Bay gives each stall one 20-amp GFCI outlet, and food stalls get two. Its vendors bring their own CSA approved 120 V heater, interior LED lighting and a 50′ outdoor extension cord rated 14/3 or heavier. Food trucks there must run any generator at no more than 70 dB.

What the Electrical Safety Authority Asks

Ontario’s Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) treats festivals as their own case. Organizers of large events file an ESA notification of electrical work four to six weeks before the event. Food vendors that run on generators each need a notification, and organizers keep those numbers on file. On a Van Blanc container stall, the electrical our shop roughs in before delivery gets its final connection from a licensed electrician on site. Generators larger than 12 kilowatts or 240 volts need a notification and an inspector’s review. For every stall, ESA advises three-prong outdoor-rated cords plugged into GFCI protection, cords left uncoiled, and the product certification mark on lights and heaters.

Overnight Lockup and Stock Storage

Overnight lockup is where a Christmas market stall shows what it is made of. The Distillery’s 2026 vendor guidelines are blunt: the festival does not offer on-site storage for vendors. Christmas on the Bay posts a security guard after hours and overnight. It still encourages vendors to take high-value items and cash home at the end of each market day. Every vendor there brings a padlock. A hut with a padlock is a deterrent. A steel door with a puck lock behind a welded shroud, or a padlock inside a welded lockbox, is a harder target.

Stock storage happens off site. A maker selling at the Distillery for 52 days restocks from a garage, a studio or a basement. Event companies run the same logic at a larger scale, and the off-season depot for event gear shows how it looks once the season ends.

Fake Vendor Invitations

Fake vendor invitations are now part of market season, and four of the organizers we read warn about them on their own pages. The Distillery says official messages about its vendor applications come only from addresses ending in @thedistillery.ca or @thedistillerydistrict.com. The City of Niagara Falls warns of emails impersonating its market staff and asks vendors to apply only through its own link. The City of Cambridge reports scammers sending small businesses a fake application link, and says it alerted Waterloo Regional Police. Christmas on the Bay states that it does not recruit vendors through Gmail or other unofficial accounts. The rule under all four: apply through the organizer’s own site, and never pay a booth fee to a stranger’s email.

Container buyers meet the same pattern from the other side. Callers tell Van Blanc about a bin on Facebook priced far under every yard in Ontario. Two weeks later, some of them phone back, scammed. The marketplace bin that never arrives follows that script, and the defence matches the markets’ advice: deal with an address you can drive to.

Container Stalls for Organizers and BIAs

A container stall is a small shipping container fitted with a serving front, a door for the vendor, lighting and a lock. Van Blanc builds them from 8ft and 10ft boxes at our Brantford yards before delivery. Each one stands in a market square for the season and holds the market’s gear for the rest of the year. This section is for the BIA, municipality or market committee planning anywhere from 4 to 20 stalls. It also serves the vendor who wants to bring a stall of their own. Christmas on the Bay leaves room for that. Under its “other stall option,” a vendor can ask to bring their own stall or trailer. The request comes with dimensions, photos and a note on how it suits an outdoor winter market. Farm stores make the same jump, and a farm stand that grew into a locked store shows the build from the seller’s side.

An 8ft on an 8 by 7 Footprint

The 8ft container is the closest steel match to the 8′ x 7′ stall. Van Blanc’s product page gives it 7’5″ of outside height. Inside it is 7’6″ by 6’11”, with 6’9″ of headroom and about 52 sq ft of floor. The cargo door opening is 6’11” x 6’5″. The grey 8ft in recent stock has cargo doors on one end, plus a man door and a barred window on the side. For a stall, the steel man door on the vendor’s side becomes the way in. The serving front goes on the face toward the aisle. That product page lists a roll-up added at our yards among the extras that change an 8ft quote.

A 10ft Beside the 8 by 10 Cabin

The 10ft container takes the ground of the Distillery’s largest cabin: an 8 ft x 10 ft footprint. Outside, it measures 9’10” long, 8’0″ wide and 8’6″ tall. It holds about 560 ft³ inside, or 4 standard pallets on the floor. As a stall, that leaves room for a counter, shelving on both walls and back stock behind the vendor. Van Blanc’s 10ft page calls the ten the smallest container that converts into occupied space without feeling like a phone booth. It lists coffee stands and ticket booths among its uses. Recent 10ft stock has included units with a roll-up door, with a man door and window, or with cargo doors alone. Roll-up and cargo doors, compared side by side, help decide which end of the box faces the aisle.

Fronts: Roll-Up, Window or Awning

The serving front decides how a stall works. At Van Blanc, roll-up fronts in 6, 7, 8 and 10 foot widths can go on any face of a container, with American-made door hardware. The same page notes that a side-facing roll-up turns a plain box into a serving window or a seasonal storefront, closed in thirty seconds. On a ten, the simplest version, when one is in stock, is a 10ft that arrives with its roll-up already hung in the end wall. There, the door fills most of the end. Where shoppers should stand at a counter, the shop cuts a serving window at counter height. Our pop-up retail guide also describes a single serving window under a hinged awning, with a counter. Every cut is made at the yard under engineered drawings before the box ships.

Spec Sheet for a Steel Stall

  • Size: an 8ft for an 8′ x 7′ row, a 10ft for an 8′ x 10′ row or a food stall.
  • Front: a roll-up, a counter-height serving window, or an awning window over a counter.
  • Security: a lockbox at the cargo doors, standard on most new containers and added to any used one.
  • Airflow: most containers ship with 2 to 4 vents, and two vents against the overnight sweat matter when a heater runs all day and the steel cools at night.
  • Comfort: insulation framed in at the yard, which our features page calls essential for occupied builds such as shops.
  • Power: lighting and outlets roughed in at the yard, with the final connection by your licensed electrician.

Counting Boxes for a Market

Counting boxes starts with the stall plan. As a rule of thumb, a market needs one box per vendor stall, plus one or two for its own kit. That kit is the lights, the garland, the tree stand, the folding tables and the wayfinding signs. A committee running 12 stalls is looking at 13 or 14 boxes, delivered in the weeks before set-up. As a starting point, give food stalls the 10ft and craft stalls the 8ft. A mixed row still lines up, because both boxes measure 8 feet on one side. Event crews run their gear the same way, and how an event company packs a season into steel shows the packing order.

Grades for a Customer-Facing Box

Grade matters more on a market stall than on a storage box, because shoppers stand a foot away from the steel. Van Blanc teaches four grades, and our custom-features page matches each to a kind of build. A one-trip box is new: it made a single loaded voyage from the factory, which is why the industry calls it one-trip. For a row of stalls the public will photograph, new one-trip stall shells in factory paint take paint or a wrap cleanly.

GradeWhat it isMarket use, per our custom-features page
New (one-trip)One loaded voyage from the factory; may show minor handling marksCustomer-facing kiosks and anything shoppers see

Wind and watertightUsed, doors close and seal, visible cosmetic wearThe market’s storage boxes: vents, bars, lockboxes, shelving
As-isOlder units with structural questionsA donor shell for heavy custom cutting only

Each box in a row can carry its own grade, and the buyer picks it for the job that box does. To compare every size and grade on the ground this week, side by side, start with the stock list, then walk the rows. Every quote comes with a real lead time, not a hopeful one.

Pricing a row of market stalls?

Send the stall count, the organizer’s footprint and the face that takes the serving front. Tell us which stalls serve food and where the boxes spend January. We will match each stall to an 8ft or a 10ft and choose the grade, doors and vents with you. One all-in number comes back with a real lead time. A call to the yards is the quickest way to start.

Delivery Before the Gates Open

Delivery for a market row is a calendar problem first. Van Blanc’s stock boxes with no modifications reach most of Ontario in 1-3 days from our 4 Brantford yards. How the tilt-deck lays a box down explains the truck that brings them. A stall with a new front ships once the build is finished and inspected, on the date written into the quote. Work back from move-in day: Christmas on the Bay’s vendors move in on Wednesday, December 2, and the Distillery opens on November 12. An order placed in October leaves room for the shop and a calm delivery day. Road distances below are measured with OSRM from east Brantford.

Distillery District, Toronto102.1 km81 min1-3 days
Niagara Falls Exchange109.3 km85 min1-3 days
Lansdowne Park, Ottawa550.0 km6 h 28 min1 to 3 days

On a paved square, a box needs to sit level on its four corners, on timbers or blocks where the surface is uneven. That keeps the doors and the roll-up closing square. Levelling the corners is the part a committee can do itself, and what a tilt-deck drop does to paving is worth reading first. The truck needs a straight run to tilt its deck, so mark the approach. Decide which way each front faces before it backs in, because turning a placed box takes a forklift. A row of stalls is ordered the same way as one box. Pick the size and the front, walk the units in our yards, and book the delivery before the square gets busy. Late drops meet frost, and setting a box down on frozen ground covers what changes after freeze-up.

A Vendor’s December Circuit

A vendor’s market circuit can fill seven weeks, and in 2026 several dates overlap. The weekend of November 27 to 29 puts the Cambridge Holiday Market and the Holiday HandMade Market in Niagara Falls on the same days. December 3 to 6 stacks Kitchener’s first Christkindl weekend against Christmas on the Bay in Meaford. The Festival of Trees markets open in Mississauga on December 4. Ottawa runs every weekend in between, and the Distillery runs straight through to January 3, 2027. Shoppers can read the same dates as a route plan. Cambridge and Kitchener sit a week apart on the calendar, and Niagara Falls has its pair in November. The vendor’s version adds a restock stop. Stock that comes home on Sunday night needs a dry, locked place until Thursday. A shelved small box at home turns that into a ten-minute load.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where will the Toronto Christmas market be held in 2026?

The Distillery Winter Village, formerly the Toronto Christmas Market, runs at 55 Mill Street from November 12, 2026 to January 3, 2027. The tree lighting is Thursday, November 12 at 6 p.m. Tickets are needed after 4 p.m. on set days; entry is free before 4 p.m. and all day Monday to Wednesday through December 13.

What is the best Christmas market in Ontario?

No official ranking exists, so organizer counts are the fairest guide. The Distillery Winter Village in Toronto expects 1 million visitors over 52 days and points to Frommer’s naming it one of the world’s best. Ottawa’s market at Lansdowne Park counts 400,000+ guests each year. Kitchener’s Christkindl was a Festivals and Events Ontario Top 100 pick in 2025.

What is the most Christmassy town in Ontario?

There is no official title. Elora makes a good case: its market site quotes A.J. Casson calling it “Ontario’s Prettiest Village,” with 88,000 lights and cedar chalets, though its 2026 dates were not posted on October 2. Kitchener, with Christkindl in its 30th year, and Meaford, home of Christmas on the Bay, are other contenders.

What are the top 10 Christmas markets in Ontario for 2026?

The ten worth planning around start with the Distillery Winter Village, Kitchener’s Christkindl and the Ottawa Christmas Market. Add Deck the Halls and the Holiday HandMade Market in Niagara Falls, the Cambridge Holiday Market and the Mississauga Festival of Trees. Round it out with Christmas on the Bay in Meaford, the Elora Christmas Market and Holiday Hills at STACKT market. Elora and STACKT had not posted 2026 dates on October 2.

How do you become a vendor at a Christmas market in Ontario?

Apply through the organizer’s own site in spring. For 2026, Christmas on the Bay closed April 30 and Christkindl closed May 1. The Distillery closed its screening form June 19, and Niagara Falls closed September 27. Expect a handmade preference, proof of liability insurance, and a certified food handler for food. Ignore booth offers from unofficial email accounts.

Can a shipping container be used as a Christmas market stall?

Yes. An 8ft container sits on nearly the same footprint as the 8′ x 7′ stalls at Christmas on the Bay and Deck the Halls. A 10ft covers the 8 ft x 10 ft of the Distillery’s largest cabin. Van Blanc fits roll-up fronts, serving windows, man doors, vents and lockboxes at the yard before delivery.

How do vendors keep stock safe overnight at a Christmas market?

Plan to take it home. The Distillery offers no on-site storage for vendors. Christmas on the Bay posts an overnight security guard and still encourages vendors to remove high-value items and cash each night. A padlock goes on every stall. A Van Blanc steel stall with the padlock inside a lockbox raises the bar for whatever stays.
