A puck lock alone is not enough to secure a shipping container in Ontario. A hardened puck defeats the shackle attack, but the hasp it sits in stays exposed to bolt cutters and angle grinders. The honest setup is three layers: a hardened puck, a welded steel lockbox shrouding the hasp, and an internal hasp across both doors.
A hardened-steel puck lock is a good lock. We sell them, we install them, we have used them for three decades. On paper, a serious upgrade over a standard padlock.
In the field, the puck alone is still not enough. The shackle is hidden but the hasp the puck sits in is not. A thief with an angle grinder cuts the hasp itself, the lock falls off with the cut piece, and the doors open. Total elapsed time: under four minutes on a hasp.

A lock box is a steel shroud welded to the right-hand cargo door, covering the hasp and the puck lock so neither is reachable from outside. Done right, only the keyway face of the puck is exposed. Everything a bolt cutter, grinder, or pry bar could grip is inside the box.
The Van Blanc spec on a 20ft or 40ft is 3/16-inch (4.8 mm) plate steel, roughly 5 by 6 inches, welded continuously on the top, bottom, and left side with an open right side for key access. Welded, not bolted: removing it means cutting through the welds, which takes time and noise the thief usually does not have.
What the lockbox adds:

Factory-Weld, Aftermarket Weld, or Through-Bolt: Which Install Is Best?
The lockbox attaches three ways, in declining order of theft resistance. We almost always do option one.
Factory weld (yard weld before delivery). A certified welder runs a continuous bead on the top, bottom, and one side of the lockbox where it meets the cargo door. Typically 1/4-inch fillet welds, ground smooth, painted. Removing the box requires cutting through hardened welds with a grinder, which is slow, noisy, and visible. This is what we do at our 4 Brantford yards before the truck rolls.
Aftermarket weld (on-site at the customer’s property). Same welds, done after delivery. The challenge is power and a clean welding environment. We send a mobile welder to a Brantford-region property if the container was already delivered. Through-bolt installation. Some hardware-store kits attach via bolts through the door. We do not install this way. The lock is a knockoff. The casting is mild steel sprayed with grey paint. The shackle is mild steel with a thin hardened coating.
