The small air volume that speeds summer heat-ups is exactly what keeps winter sessions viable; the heater is only ever conditioning a couple thousand litres of air and a curve of wood.

The asterisk is everything around the barrel rather than the barrel. Siting and the Base

A barrel sauna asks less of the ground than almost anything else this series has covered, and that is a genuine selling point. The cradles want a level, drained, stable surface: a compacted gravel pad, patio stones on screenings, or an existing deck checked for the point loads. Door facing the house shortens the winter walk; door facing the view sells the sessions; prevailing wind across the stovepipe matters for wood burners; and the clearance rules in the maker’s manual (combustible distances for the stove, service access around the bands) get read before the pad is poured, not after. Sizing a Barrel: Diameter, Length, and the Porch Question

Barrel sizing runs on two numbers and one option box, and misreading any of them is how a two-person sauna ends up hosting one comfortable person.

Diameter sets the human geometry. The common range runs roughly six to seven feet outside, and the difference matters more than a foot suggests: the smaller barrels seat average heights comfortably and tax tall sitters at the bench line, while the seven-footers restore the headroom and open the option of facing benches. Sit in one before buying if anyone in the house is over six feet; it is a two-minute test that settles the diameter question permanently.

Length sets the occupancy and the heater math. Short barrels around six feet are intimate two-seaters that heat fastest of all; the mid lengths carry four; and the long barrels stretch toward genuine six-person territory while giving back some of the format’s quick-heat advantage, since every added foot is more air and more stave area to warm. And the porch, the option box that looks decorative and is not: a covered porch or vestibule on the door end gives winter sessions a place for towels, robes, and boots, keeps snow off the threshold, and is the single option most four-season owners say they would not give back. Kit, Assembled, or Crane-Set: How Barrels Arrive in Ontario

The kit is the default: staves, ends, bands, cradles, and hardware on a pallet, assembled by two people in a long day or a relaxed weekend. Pre-assembled delivery trades money for the weekend: the finished barrel arrives on a trailer or flatbed and gets rolled, skidded, or lifted into place.   • The geometry taxes the benches. The curve that drops heat onto the benches also curves the walls into them: tall sitters find the headline diameter optimistic, and lying flat on an upper bench is a cabin-sauna luxury the barrel mostly lacks.
  • The bands are a chore with a consequence. Seasonal retightening is easy and skippable, and skipping it is how barrels start leaking light, heat, and eventually water.
  • Base models are three-season buildings. The uninsulated entry tier works in January but burns fuel and patience doing it; the four-season versions cost real money more.
  • No change room unless you buy one. The porch or vestibule that makes winter undressing civilized is an option line, and towels on a snowbank get old by the second session.
  • Resale is a haul. A barrel moves house better than a shed and worse than anything on a truck’s own corner castings; factor the crane or the trailer if you might relocate.
