Almost every museum, archive, and historical society reaches the same crisis: the collection grows faster than the building. Accessions arrive, the vault fills, and material that should be in controlled storage ends up in a hallway, a damp basement, or a rented mini-storage unit where nothing is monitored and nobody controls the climate. For a small institution without the capital for a purpose-built annex, the choices all involve putting irreplaceable objects somewhere their own conservator would not approve.

A shipping container will not, on its own, be a conservation-grade store, and we will say that plainly throughout this page. But an insulated, lockable container on the institution’s own ground, with the climate its conservator specifies, is a secure, monitorable overflow room that beats every improvised alternative, and costs a fraction of a built addition. The trick is knowing exactly what the environment has to do, and where our job ends and the conservator’s begins.

That light line is a quiet argument for a container: a windowless steel box has a default light level of zero, so the hardest environmental control in most galleries is free in storage. The humidity and temperature are where the insulated envelope earns its place.

The condensation math makes the same point: in a sealed space at 20 C and 50% RH, a 10 C temperature drop reaches 100% humidity and condensation, which is why insulation and buffering matter far more than a big aggressive HVAC. The build is a security-and-envelope job. A Corten steel shell and a lockbox-protected door answer the security clause that irreplaceable collections demand. Foam insulation and a vapour barrier give the stable-and-moderate envelope. Shelving and archival racking fit the material, and a datalogging thermometer-hygrometer, the conservator’s choice, provides the monitoring record that any accredited collection needs. For the bulk of a robust, low-sensitivity collection, tools, stone, ceramic, stable metals, boxed inactive records, the goal is security, dust exclusion, and keeping RH off the 75% damp line, which a well-insulated box does well.
