The over billion route extension has been under construction since 2021 and will extend the TTC’s Line 2 Bloor-Danforth another 7.8 kilometres east, adding three new stations along the alignment. The project’s overall cost more than doubled through 2025 due to scope, schedule, and inflation pressures.
Tunnelling began in January 2023 using the largest tunnel boring machine ever used on a Canadian transit project. The TBM, dubbed “Diggy Scardust” in reference to David Bowie and Scarborough, runs trains in a single tunnel with a diameter of 10.7 metres and is now approximately halfway through its nearly seven-kilometre journey. Construction work at the future Lawrence and McCowan Station site (adjacent to Scarborough Health Network’s General Hospital) progressed through 2025 with piling work, retaining structures, and groundwater barrier installation completed in preparation for station construction.
