Haldimand was incorporated as a town in 1974 by the amalgamation of the villages of Cayuga, Hagersville, and Caledonia along with the townships of Oneida, Seneca, North Cayuga, South Cayuga, and parts of Rainham and Walpole. In 2001, the municipality was enlarged again by absorbing Dunnville and half of Nanticoke. The administrative seat is Cayuga, the original county seat.
