Nanticoke is the heavy-industrial anchor of Haldimand County and one of the most significant single industrial complexes in southwestern Ontario. The story begins in 1974 when Stelco broke ground on a brand-new greenfield steel mill on the north shore of Lake Erie, ten years before the same company would shutter its older Hamilton operations. The first elements of steel were manufactured at Stelco Lake Erie Works during summer 1980. The mill has run continuously since then, employing roughly 1,400 people on the Nanticoke site and generating an estimated 25 per cent of the surrounding community’s economic activity.
The ownership history has churned. U.S. Steel Canada purchased Stelco in 2007. In 2024 American steel manufacturer Cleveland-Cliffs acquired Stelco in a multi-billion-dollar deal, making the Nanticoke mill part of one of North America’s largest integrated steel operations.
