Burtch, the River-Edge Hamlet South of Brantford

Burtch is a small rural hamlet in the former Brantford Township, now part of the County of Brant, sitting roughly ten kilometres south of our Brantford yard along the edge of the Grand River and the Six Nations of the Grand River territory. The community grew up around a settler post office in the nineteenth century and remains a quiet rural address: a few historic buildings, a Baptist church, a public school, and a mostly agricultural footprint extending out from the small village core.

The Burtch name carries historical weight beyond its hamlet size. The Burtch Industrial Farm operated on land here from 1948 until 1949, when the property was converted to the Burtch Correctional Centre. The correctional facility ran until January 2003, and after closure the entire site was remediated and turned over to the Six Nations of the Grand River to settle outstanding land claims. The Burtch Tract itself was originally part of the Haldimand Tract, granted by the Crown to the Mohawks and Six Nations in recompense for lands lost after the American Revolution. We acknowledge that history honestly: the hamlet of Burtch and the surrounding settler farms are a different geography than the returned Tract, but the broader story is part of the place.

That geography matters for delivery. Burtch is one of our shortest runs, roughly ten kilometres south of our Brantford yard, fifteen minutes by tilt-deck flatbed in normal traffic.
